How is that gas "better"?
Less impurities, & a better cleaning additive package is added to the base fuel (dependant on fuel brand), & higher octane which is more "explosive".
The main reason is the higher the octane, the more the timing can be advanced & thus the bigger the compression (within the actual engine spec), & the cleaner & more complete the burn of the fuel. The side effect is extracting more bang out of the combustion, & having a faster bang, & therefore more power & slightly more torque...
My car engine has variable exhaust & intake camshafts, & was designed to use 95RON from the factory as its main fuel, & in an emergency it will cope with lower grade 91RON fuel.. Now I always used 98RON to 99RON Shell Vpower/Optimax/Nitro.....& yes my cars ECU can alter the camshafts & the timing of the spark plug firing to make use of the higher grade fuel....BUT as the ECU was designed to run on 91/95RON it was unable to advance the timing of the spark firing enough to make full use of the 98/99RON fuel. So when I got it remapped (Revo stage 1-B), the ECU parameters for the spark firing were advanced further (started earlier in the compression cycle by the piston) so it can make use 100% of the high octane fuel... The combustion is so complete that when I get the emissions test every year as part of the UK MOT the results are so low that they hardly register on the emissions equipment!!
