Winter tires - altimax arctic

Also: winter tires? Never had them on any car before but considering them for this one; what, if any, do you guys use?

x2 on the General Altimax Arctic's....one of the cheaper priced snow tires, but they last forever and have great traction

Do you plan on reusing the OEM wheels (swapping tires) or buying a dedicated wheel/tire set?

Steel wheels, "steelies", are the cheaper/more economical route.
If you don't have the PP (performance package) you can get a set of 16" steelies for cheap here, $180 SHIPPED for a set:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/usw-62-76521s

16" snow tires are cheaper than 17" or 18" tires too, btw. You could go with 205/55/16's or 215/55/16's:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...pc=15971&ar=55&rf=true&rd=16&rc=MIDINT&cs=205
or
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...pc=26130&ar=55&rf=true&rd=16&rc=MIDINT&cs=215

They have 17" steelies too:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...83&c=2&rcz=48154&pc=56186&wd=17&rw=&rc=MIDINT

And then 17" tires, 205/50/17:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...pc=17007&ar=50&rf=true&rd=17&rc=MIDINT&cs=205

Or the OEM size of 225/45/17's:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...pc=15978&ar=45&rf=true&rd=17&rc=MIDINT&cs=225
or
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...pc=17010&ar=45&rf=true&rd=17&rc=MIDINT&cs=225

If you didn't want to buy new wheels too, Discount Tire had some 18" snow tires in the OEM size of 225/40/18 for only $80/each, but apparently they're gone and/or the price went up to $99/each now:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/fi...pc=17015&ar=40&rf=true&rd=18&rc=MIDINT&cs=225

BUT you end up having to pay ~$64 in labor every winter/spring to swap them over and have them mounted/balanced

I, personally, have separate wheel/tire sets instead of swapping just the tires over to the OEM wheels.

Anyways....see Ben at Discount Tire in Novi (off Grand River)....tell him (VW) Dan sent you. He does all my wheel/tire stuff for me, which is a lot of stuff, and he'll take care of you for sure.

The sooner the better if you decide to do anything. Winter tires have already been produced and whatever is out there for stock/inventory is it for the season. A lot of tires have sold out on TireRack.com already, for example.

Sorry for all that info above, lol. Any more questions or anything, post up or PM me

New here have 2016 black golf R with dcc/DSG. You'll see me rolling around A2 and metro Detroit area. Probably not to frequently since it's not my daily. It has black 18" drag wheels with blizzaks on for the winter so I do stand out from the pack. Absolutely love the car coming from Focus ST, 2015 Subaru WRX STI this car is better overall then both. Looking at getting a downpipe intake and tune. I was thinking about Steves European auto since it's only certified APR tuner in MI. However I haven't seen when APR is releasing it anyhow, hope by spring because that's when I planned on getting it done.

Cheers

Steve's does good work, no doubt

But I, personally, would save some money ($$$) & put the downpipe on myself and/or I can help you.

I didn't think the install would be to difficult just thought it was bad to drive with a downpipe hooked up on the stock tune. Figured I'd get it all done there and tuned at the same time. Not sure how long it takes but have other vehicles to use in the meantime.

Thanks for the offers and recommendation that Steves work is that of quality.

You can drive on the aftermarket downpipe without a tune and have no issues. You'll most likely get a CEL on the dash, but that's it. No other resulting damage.
(this is how everyone does it...install first & then tune it later on)

Then when you get the tune, the CEL will turn off

Ah ok that is good to hear. I'm coming from the Subaru world where downpipe no tune engine go boom.

I can't wait until spring
