Well Car and Driver said the manual was nearly 1 second quicker to 60 than the automatic and some 2.4 seconds to 100 mph. Although the difference to 60 decreased in later reviews, the manual was still said to be faster.

That was with the car stock. Also I think I remember some tuners offering more torque in their tunes for the manual ? Although that could be for the gen2 TSI, I'm not sure.
The manual actually was limited on torque from the factory 184 vs 199. Stock times are reflective of the power that is being delivered to the car. When you are now modifying them to easily overpower the drag of the torque converter, the auto will win unless the manual has a good driver. Then it's anyone's race
