Hi all,

Anyone here familiar with the MK7 Rear Shock Mount (Chassis Side)? I noticed that mine was stripped and would need to rethread. However, I am scared with the thickness I have to play with. Any ideas if a helicoil or a timesert would work? See images below - any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've done this. It sucks but doable with a helicoil.

Since it's steel, it requires plenty of effort and strength. You will need to progress slowly and back out many times to clear debris. My biggest fear was staying perpendicular to the hole. Anyway, it worked out fine for me.

edit:
it's a great example of one of those locations where reusing hardware can have consequences.

on a stock end link, not much worry. On the frame of the car, the engine, the tranny, extra care is the way to go. learned it the hard way :)

good luck

The back section of the threads look undamaged. Prior to drilling that out, I would try chasing the threads to clear any debris and then testing with a new undamaged bolt first just to see if there’s still meat in the threads. If possible, begin chasing from the rear, Undamaged section for correct alignment. It’s possible it’s still salvageable, but hard to tell on my phone. Anyways, worth a shot.

I agree with DK, I'd grab a tap and try cleaning it out first. If you are successful and you get a good bite with the bolt, you win. If not, you are still in the same place as before and need to install a helicoil or timesert.

Good point of DK. Try a tap first.
Had a strange noise from rear left in my new 2017 GTI SE after I bought it. Dealer wasn’t able to find the issue. After 5k miles I changed the suspension to Bilstein B16. Started front left, of course on last corner rear left I wasn’t able to get one of the top mount bolts out. My buddy showed up with a small Dewalt impact, a tap, and a new bolt. This is how the bolt came from the factory on my car:

After taping and with a new bolt ever since it’s okay. Even 10 suspension changes later the thread is still holding up fine.

Must have been assembled late in the day on a Friday afternoon.
