Retrofit Ambient Light on Dashboard for MK7 Golf R

Eh, if I post something for the community and someone takes it to elsewhere for money without giving credit I would be bothered.

Doesn't mean I think I invented anything or that what I posted publicly is somehow proprietary. If anything having posted it publicly suggests I want the community to benefit. Tutorial videos on YouTube put together community knowledge that is otherwise spread through various forums all over the internet. It's great, but throw out some credit 🤷‍♂️.

And if there's a repository of publicly available information about the BCM share the link. The digging around is fun but I just want to do some lighting mods without sitting in my car on my laptop running VCDS and having 15 tabs open, 3 of which are on Google translate.

@Cuzoe gets it.

Talking about having 15 tabs open... first I was wondering how does Leuchte30FR know its the footwell lights, came up to this and this which then got me into searching the Interior Light, light configuration adaptation
Ambiente_Applikationsleisten_in_Tuertafel: --> door ambient lighting strips, mine has this active
Ambiente_Lautsprecher: --> Ambient lighting in loudspeaker? who actually has this, what output is this supposed to be?
Ambiente_Applikationsleisten_in_Instrumententafel: instrument panel ambient lighting strip, is this supposed to be for the dash above the glovebox?
Cockpitbeleuchtung: Cockpit lighting
Mittelkonsolenbeleuchtung: Center console lighting
Dachbeleuchtung: Roof lighting
Panoramaschiebedachbeleuchtung: Panoramic sunroof lighting
Fussraumbeleuchtung: Footwell lighting
Farbwahl ueber HMI: Color selection via HMI:
Farbwahl ueber Fahrprofil: Color selection via driving profile
LIN-Dachkonsole lokal aktivierbar: LIN roof console can be activated locally
Ambientemenue mit globalem aus: Ambient menu with global from
Ambientemenue mit alle Zonen: Ambience menu with all zones

Then I realized I had DV52 lighting guide, and saw that Leuchte31-34 are spares for ambient lighting. My car has them as all not active. I'm thinking I could change one of those Lasttyp to one of the following:
45 Ambientelicht 5 Ambient lighting 5 Ambient lighting
46 Ambientelicht 1 Ambient lighting 1 Ambient lighting
47 Ambientelicht 2 Ambient lighting 2 Ambient lighting
48 Ambientelicht 3 Ambient lighting 3 Ambient lighting
49 Ambientelicht 4 Ambient light 4 Ambient lighting
50 Umfeldbeleuchtung Ambient lighting

I just wish someone already knew which ambient channel is for what. I couldn't find any Leuchte channels in the door controllers to determine how the door card ambient lights are coded. but with the above I think there just might be enough info to do some experimentation.

Agreed, if the BCM has a pre-assigned output that I can assign to one of the spare pins to operate exactly the same as the footwell output with its own slider I'd be one happy camper. The cupholder output sounds like the answer. I think the video only demonstrated it, looking to see if @mr-fix had a full written tutorial on that one.
As far as I know
Wiring:
Code:
BCM, plug C, pin 35.

Adaptation channel for C/35 pin:
Code:
09 → Adaptation → Leuchte32AMBL 2C35.
Functions that need to be added: Ambientelicht1 and/or Ambientelicht2.

Adaptation/coding to enable slider (not sure if all needs to be set to installed, some experiments required):
Code:
09 → Long Coding → Byte: 17 → Bit: 2 → enable
09 → Adaptation → Interior light; light configuration - Ambiente_Applikationsleisten_in_Instrumententafel → installed
09 → Adaptation → Interior light; light configuration - Cockpitbeleuchtung → installed
09 → Adaptation → Interior light; light configuration - mittelkonsolenbeleuchtung → installed

There's also about 15 different adaptation channels that control different brightness levels and dimming speed and delay at different scenarios. For example if you set you footwell lights slider to 100% it will actually not work at 100%. If you open the door it will go even brighter. This is can be found here:
Code:
09 → Adaptation → Interior lighting: parameter
Channels with cockpit and miko are the interesting ones.

MIKO = MIttelKOnsole = Center Console
mittelkonsolenbeleuchtung = Mittel Konsolen Beleuchtung = Center Console Illumantion

If you're gonna be petty about someone making helpful videos with.. uh.. publicly available information, why don't you set up your own YouTube channel man?

Not all of us get defensive when things we post online for free get made into videos.

I have posted several coding tweaks over the past few years, including one that mr-fix picked up on. Do you see me whining about it like I personally invented the Volkswagen Body Control Module? 😂

I have NO interest in creating a YouTube channel.

You will clearly see in my threads that I ALWAYS state where I get the info from & give credit where credit is due.

You will also note that I have had to place a disclaimer at the top of ALL my threads due to companies using them as a direct link & inferring that I was working with them/sponsored by them.

The info I place in this forum is free to use for the benefit of the community.

YouTube is monetised...therefore the incentive is to have more content & more subscribers.

Not that I feel like I need to explain myself, but still I would like to clear some things up:

Yes, I started posting MK7 videos in 2018. This is when I bought my MK7.
Joined this forum in 2019 (joined some other VW/MK7 related forums as well in 2019/20). Mostly to share what I already know. I don't need to create account if I just want to browse the forum. And I would not create one if I was planning to browse for content that I want to make in to a video.

Yes, I make YouTube tutorials and make some ad money on it. So when I share my videos/tutorials it also helps out my channel.

I can not reinvent MK7, most of the things that I show in my tutorials were already covered by someone. If not on YouTube, then there's forum somewhere in the internet where someone pointed to the same feature that I did.
Happily I don't relay on those information to much because: a) forums are full of incomplete or simply incorrect information, sometimes intentionally designed to brick your car b) I dig in my MK7s modules with OBDeleven on a daily basis and I still happen to find uncovered functions which later on I'm first to publish. And later on this gets shared and copied, some make money of it with individual services, some sell PDFs with coding instructions. And all that is fine with me. I've even make a separate website with coding instructions, just to organize the knowledge and to share it with the community.

MQB cars (Passat B8, Golf MK7, Audi A3 8V, Skoda Octavia 5E, Seat Leon 5F, and other) share a lot when it comes to electronics and software. This means that there are software options available from the factory in Audi or VW Passat which were not available in Golf MK7 but can be easily enabled/installed in MK7. So by browsing manuals, wiring diagrams, SSP documents of different cars I find ideas for new mods. Like the Audi A3 8V cup holder with slider that can be retrofitted into Golf MK7. Or electric tail gate from Octavia retrofitted into MK7.

Ross-tech forums is great for diagnostics, but not so much for feature activations and mods.

Thanks!

Since my car came stock with ambient lighting and auto headlights, my Interior Lighting, parameters probably have most of the settings set, unless ambientelichte1/2 use a different set. Here is what my current settings are:

If I set pin 35 and program Leuchte32AMBL per your instructions, will it work like the existing ambient lighting per my current Interior lighting, parameter settings? Much appreciated.

I need to find an ad-map (in CSV Form so I can run a difference report) of a facelift car with RGB ambient lighting from factory, from the Ross Tech clean scans forum probably... and maybe a scan of a "pre-facelift" Audi A3 8V as well, so many interesting things in this BCM...

Adaptations that translate to Do not calculate the color output of (instrument panel lighting, cockpit lighting, loudspeaker lighting, roof lighting, panoramic roof lighting)... all of these are set to active
Then there are two adaptations that translate to Multicolored cockpit lighting, multicolored dash lighting... both are set to not active

As we know, we don't have the ambient light color list adaptations in our BCM. But we do have RGB values as shown in this picture. RGB Value 225, 225, 225 isn't quite white, but I'm also not sure what these are being used for. These 3 sets of RGB values are not present on the 7.5 scan.
Snip.JPG

I also compared the LIN module/group/slave section. Facelift car has lichtfunktion [light function] for group 1 (door), group 2 & 3 (Ctr. console) and group 4 & 5 (I-panel). The corresponding verbauinfo [installation info] for groups 1 - 5 is (multicolor).

Of course, it's quite possible (likely even) that trying to match any of these LIN adaptations to those found on the facelfit BCM will result in "request out of range" on my BCM :ROFLMAO:.

You really need to talk to either @DV52 or @Chillout.....

Both those forum members did huge amounts of research/testing & "wrote the book" on infotainment, lighting channels, & other electronics & that's way back in 2015...I think both are on Ross-tech also...

Believe me, I'm over there often... and have been in communication with Chillout as well. I have good news and bad news...

Good news... my BCM is happy to accept all the LIN channel adaptations (thus far) as found on the facelift cars, Erwin subscription this weekend 😬
Bad news... I had a dream about BCM adaptations and coding last night (n)

Is it really worth trying to retrofit colour changing based on stock configuration of a sister platform vs some of the made for retrofit specific kits such as ones offered by Aliexpress using wireless modules? The kit that IWMTom seemed like a "good enough" solution of course unless you are looking for a "works exactly like from the factory" type of retrofit.

I myself will likely not do colour changing since I'm quite happy with the red accents in the GTI. Now I'm hoping someone will find **THE** way to fish the wires to the TTV# and TTR# connectors easily. @Nuje attempt #3, #4..... 😁 I hope to find some time to do some exploration on my door panels in the upcoming months but finding free time is a chore these days.

Though I'd still like @DV52 input on how which Interior Light, light configuration adaptation is associated to which Ambientelicht# Lasttyp to program for Leuchte32AMBL and which Interior lighting, parameter adaptations are associated to controlling the behaviour of Ambientelicht# Lasttyp. That would put all the pieces together for ambient lighting for any customization you wish to do.

I'm looking for the wiring diagrams for an MK7.5. Want to dig through for anything ambient lighting related, and look at the BCM pinouts. On my Mk7 drawings the door lighting is in the Convenience System drawings, for example. I don't know what drawings will include what I'm looking for though, like the center console and dash lighting.

This is hardly about what is "worth it" to me... it's fun to figure things out and/or put together things the community has figured out separately into a working solution.

I've got a torsion beam Golf with retrofitted DCC... Was it worth it as compared to just buying adjustable dampers? Highly debatable but DCC is working as per factory, although there are certainly aftermarket setups that outperform.

@madwazzabi : hmm......... I've never really played with 5 x Ambientelicht settings (and they don't apply to the "Lasttyp" channel - they apply to the Lichtfunktion channels)

Why not experiment with the settings on your Leuchte32AMBL and find-out? Ain't much risk - just substitute different values.

@Cuzoe: hi.
Your "Yankee" cars are called North America Region (NAR) and they are wired different to those in the Rest-of-World (RoW) models and EUR models

Way down here in the very deep south- I don't have access to NAR material, but the BCM physically looks like this (note socket numbering):

On the wiring diagram (which is called "basic equipment"), the BCM is called J519. The naming convention for the BCM connections on the wiring diagrams have the general structure like T73c /11. The "c" means socket C (see picture) - "T73" means that the connector has a total of 73 x pins and "/11" refers to pin #11.

Socket A and socket C both have a total of 73 pins each - so these are always = "T73a" and "T73c" respectively. Socket B only has 46 x pins in total - so this connector = "T46c"

Also, when you are trying to identify which Leutche-set does what - the naming convention tells you the socket/pin # on the BCM that is controlled. For example, take Leuchte32AMBL 2C35 - "C35" means that the Leuchte-set controls pin #35 on Socket C.

So, using my explanation above - to find out which physical lamp is controlled by Leuchte32AMBL 2C35 simply search the wiring diagram for "T73c /35" and trace the wire to the lamp! Repeat for the other 34 x Leuchte-sets and you will have a complete decoding list!! Eazy-Peazy-Lemon-Squeezy!!!

Hope this helps!!
Don
