Bump stops - To trim or not to trim

sorry, couldn't find better pics ;)

Bump stops are used as a helper spring in many applications. As such, most times it will be important to trim them. With the GTI already having a sport suspension, trimming the bump stops isn't much of an issue. We prefer to trim them to keep suspension travel similar to stock, but there can also be value in not trimming them as it will limit travel and prevent rubbing on more aggressive wheel fitments.

How much do you suggest trimming off the bump stop? I'm planning to run wheels that stick out about 7mm/12mm or 12mm/17mm more than stock.

We recommend 1/2" front and 1/3 - 3/4" rear, trimmed from the top.

Sorry... silly question but... which side is the "top" for the bump stop? I'd just like to be 100% sure.

I've cut bump stops on every coilover install I've done, didn't feel the need with the moderate drop of my VWR springs, but I probably should have as I've hit the bump stops a few times on larger "g out" bumps in the road at highway speed. Pretty harsh when you hit them

Hello, first post on the forum here. :D:D:D
I'm from Brazil and I have the same doubt ...

Before the Golf GTI I had a BMW 320i 2015 and I installed the Eibach Pro Kit on it.
I do not understand much about suspension modifications and eibach sells the pro kit stating that no further changes are necessary,.so I did not even think about cutting bump stops. I installed the springs without any other modification.

I liked the result, the car passed an extra security in driving, greater stability in curves, more "firm, rigid", with the impression of being more under my control, plus the looks improvement obviously ...
But despite all that improvement, the car got a little bouncy in some situations, like ripples and unevenness on the road, feeling some insecurity at high speeds. I thought it was normal, characteristic of the springs

Then a friend of mine, who had the same car and installed the same spring, told me that he was instructed by the mechanic that even in Eibach ProKit the result would be better if he cut the bump stops. He installed the springs with cutted bump stops and told me that the result was much better.

So I decided to redo the entire installation just to cut the bump stops... Best decision ever!!
It is amazing how a small piece of rubber can significantly change the behavior of the car. It got a lot less bouncy in the situations I said... Just perfect!

Now I have a Golf GTI and bought for it the "Sport Spring Set" also known as "Drive Gear", VW oem lowering kit. This one above:

I will install by the end of this week and I am in doubt whether or not cut the bump stops in this case!
The improvement in BMW was quite significant, so I tended to make the change in bump stops, but I know some people with the car exactly the same as mine here in Brazil, who installed this kit of springs without cutting the bump stops and say that the result It was perfect, not bouncy.

What do you think? Anyone with experience with these springs?

Fefi, the DG drop on a GTI is minimal. You will still have a good amount of travel. Most people probably don't cut them. You can also contact VW since they sell it. They are meant for the golf vs GTI but would be interesting to see what they do. I highly doubt they cut them though.

I agree. While I'm under the impression earlier DG kits came with shorter bump stops
I'm convinced you're very most probably fine with reating the stock ones as they are.
The mild lowering is highly beneficial in keeping sufficient travel and not needing to cut
your bump stops.

I have a serious case of Reverse Rake with my H&R springs... Instead of adding on the back the TT Rubber Pads or the ED spacers, can I go lower by cutting my front bump stops?

I want to level the drop a little more and I know I can achieve this by going higher on the back.. but I prefer actually going lower on the front. If cutting them will work, then I found my solution.

Thanks!
