Here are a few pics from yesterday’s session with the bronze 17x8.5 wheels.

Also I agree with Geirsen, 235/45/17 looks like the sweet spot for this wheel size. Great fitment on the wheel and no clearance issues on my car (lowered about an inch).

The donuts were good too.

What's the offset? I'm running 245 40 17 on my current 17 x 8.5 +45 wheels. I'll be going 255 40 17 next set of tires. I'm 1 in lower too. No rubbing at 245, but I've got -2.3 camber front and -1.5 in back.

Will there be more pics, from the side? I'm lowered, not sure how much (previous owner) but the factory 19's with 235/35's rub frequently on dippy or bumpy roads and it aggravates the crap out of me. Were you able to get some good compression to test for rubbing?

Those were the only pics I took but Apex took a bunch and will post in this thread.
As for clearance, no we were just in a parking lot. That said there were no issues at full lock in either direction around the parking lot.

Not really. 265 35 18 is when it gets really tight.

I had 255's under my old Miata with a lot of rolling and cutting of liners. They fit fine on the mk7 with the right offset and camber, not much fuss.

255/40/17 won’t fit up front without camber if you’re driving aggressively, and could potentially rub on the rear if you’re running a wide tire (10.2” or more). When I test fit the 255/40/17 Nitto NT01 (10.36” wide) the clearance on the rear was very very low and would of almost certainly rubbed under hard driving.

I have 255s now and don’t see myself going any wider especially in the rear. 265 front 245 rear stagger is possible though. If you have a Golf R 265s all around is more doable.

I’m running 255-40-17 Nitto NT0’s on Neuspeed RSE16’s 17x8.5 et 45
-2.5 F/-2 R Camber
I’m also at stockish ride height. No rub at the front. Very slight rub on the fuel filler guard.

Not sure how a 9” wheel will impact the tread width. Anticipating that it will reduce the tire bulge and square up the tire profile.

A 265 section width tire will be a challenge on the rear for a GTi.

These are track wheels. It's kind of understood you need to have some neg camber and optimize height to get fat tires to fit. What's the point of a 9" wide wheel on the street?

I'm going 255 next week for autocross. I've had zero issues at 245 at 1" lower -2.3 and -1.5 to -1.8 in the rear. On 17 x 8.5 +45. I don't think 255 will pose much of an issue, especially RE71Rs. Might worry if I was going with RT660 or A052. They both run wide.

If I need more clearance, I'll look at ride height, screw mod and shifting the fuel tank a little to get more room.
