I have a Standard Poodle. Yes, it is the national dog of France, BUT it is German breed. They are water retreivers. And it can kick Obama's dogs ass any day.
They would dive into icey cold water and retrieve a downed water fowl. The Germans liked them because they were soft-mouthed, and wouldn't turn the bird into hamburger on the trip back.
That fancy cut you see in the dog shows Poodles get, that's a variation that the Germans originally gave them. They clipped all the hair off where not needed to not weight the dog down with water. Then left the hair on big on the major joints, and the chest, to help lock in the heat they needed swimming in cold water.
The name Poodle comes from the German word for puddles, as once they were back from the water, thats what was forming underneath them.
