Thermostat housing and water pump fail.

The housing is plastic, the pump impeller is plastic. Nothing wrong with any of that, it's the seals that go.

So wifey's '16 GTi SE w/perf pkg (commuter car ), that just logs slow, highway miles just clicked 70k - and dealer quoted the following: replace thermostat housing (just the housing, not pump) - $1710; mount two new tires - $599 (I just had 4 new Michelin SS mounted early 2019); replace brake pads - $1345 (front with rotors, rear just pads); recondition 4 wheels (some inner well dents) - $1,259. I get dealer costs will be higher but some of these are flat out outrageous - my recent annual service (just an oil change and basic check) on my 991.1 Turbo S was $1100 (exorbitant for just an oild change, but you do have to remove the rear bumper cover, which is a PITA, as I've done it)

The kicker, nearly $1300 to 'recondition' the wheels? the Austins brand new are $194 a piece... and over $1300 to replace two rotors and 4 pads? Interesting indeed. I'll pick up the USP water pump kit and get back into doing some work myself. lol (btw, the USP deal is pretty good, as they allow for a turn-in of the old pump, with a shipping label, and they'll give you $40)

Anyone with some insight to the replacement work?

That's, um, astounding.

Water pump/t'stat assembly parts are about $300 online, let's say $500 through dealer channel. There is some labor involved, since the intake manifold usually comes off for that job, but not that many hours.

Mount and balance tires, what, $40 each at any tire store? Wheel refinishing runs about $100 each at my local specialist.

You may need to point out to your dealer that the GTI doesn't come with the solid gold brake rotor option...

Yes, that's pretty common from what I've read. VW generally replaces them., even on tuned cars.

I had mine replaced under warranty and mine's tuned. But I am lucky to have a tune friendly dealer. By the way it's the thermostat housing that's probably leaking.

Ok so I’m trying to see if there is any difference between new thermostat housing vs old thermostat housing

06L 121 111M (new) vs 06L 121 111H (old)

The only thing I noticed is that the left hole is blocked off?

Other than that, I can’t see any other differences / improvement.

I really hope it never leaks again...because damn it’s a sh!tty job! Took me whole day

All electric cars now have temperature control of the batteries (heating and cooling). The difference is there's so far almost no reports of stupid coolant problems with it, and there's plenty of ten year old electric cars out there. VW thermostat housings can't even make it to five years by comparison. Presumably due to cost cutting?

Good point. Everyone I know that has a Golf or GTI has needed the thermostat housing replaced within two years.

Most leak at a seam that is plastic welded from the factory not the mating surface (although there are some that do)

All MQB. Mine was replaced on my 18 at 20,000 miles and I'm now at 74,000 miles and it's fine. Friends of mine with the TSI had theirs replaced also.

Our 1.4 tsi was probably leaking for nearly a year before I got it done, but it made nearly five years..

The thermostat housing is the most common one.

The water pump on my '17 started leaking at about 49,500 miles. Replaced under CPO warranty.

My old '12 GTI had the water pump go out about 51,000 miles and the leak made the G 28 Engine Speed Sensor fail (car went into limp mode). This was just outside of warranty, but VW covered the repair and a new sensor!
