Kram, if you are getting a lot of pain when you foam roll, imo you should really consider getting some Graston and some trigger point work done.

there will probably be a few in your area. I would find one that also does "trigger point release" if you can....if you get really froggy try to find one who understands the concepts of "anatomy trains" and "Dr. Janda's upper and lower cross syndromes"
In any event, the graston technique alone will treat poor tissue quality and remove fascia adhesions that are causing the tenderness/pain and make you more injury resistant.
I had a bunch of that kind of therapy done down at API and it made a huge difference in an issue I was having. I put a pic up somewhere in this thread all marked up. That was from the A-Stim technique. Graston will do the same thing, but wont cause surface marks the way A Stim does.
