My trade was a 2011 Mazda3 GT hatch with nearly 83k miles, which showed the following dealer trade-in values online:
- KBB: $5,490 to $6,913 Very Good
- NADA: $6,725 Average/$7,150 Clean
- Edmunds: $5,969 Clean/$6,595 Outstanding
The car was in decent running condition, but had enough cosmetic issues that I considered it good/average at best. Even assuming the highest trade-in comp at $7,150, I calculate my 'adjusted' price on the GTI at $20,758, even better using KBB/Edmunds rates ($19.8k using KBB's Very Good midpoint).
All in all, I was a happy camper as I went in telling them them what I was willing to pay OTD, was laughed at, and then negotiated them down to the same dollar amount I asked for.
