Don't think so I'm afraid..............

VW designed the MQB platforms to be fully compatible with all drivetrains etc, so only one bodyshell.........

The space is already there

R

Just different fuel tanks, as the 4wd one is a saddle type 7 the haldex & driveshafts all stop before the gap between the wishbones which is still for the exhaust.

This is from what I can tell from parstbase & photos

EDIT

Found a better underside photo of R

I suppose they might have made the spare wheel well shallower, but diffecult to tell

Anyway defo on the estate they use the same bodyshell for 2wd & 4wd because there is a HUGE amount of room underneath, because the spare wheel is further back

I agree one would think interior room the same but many R owners mention issues in storing the shelf and I think I read issues about spare tire. Might be just that spare can not fit due to subwoofer?
Do you know R owners who can store upper shelf? Maybe share some info for other R owners.

The thing that gets me about the spare tire is, on the GTI, it has a spare tire and the subwoofer in the center of it, but on the R, it's just the subwoofer.

For a $40,000 vehicle, I kind of expected at least the same features as the GTI. I kind of feel ripped off in some areas. Still, it's not enough to make me regret buying it. Not one bit.
