Specific to you Canadian R owners.. Do you have trouble finding 502/505 VW-spec engine oils at CanadianTire/Walmart?

Based on my experience...they never go on sale and options are limited.

Also, the VW dealer is pricing their VW-brand synthetic (made by castrol) at $8.32/L which seems quite reasonable.

Lastly, any one using FRAM filters or going straight to OEM? ($17.22 is what I was quoted).

Why not use Mobil 1 0w-40 ! Must be in Canadians Walmarts too ! Super cheap and doing a 12 rebate on oil purchase of 5quarts. It meets all specs and many US owner use it instead of over paying for other brands

I find the Castrol Syntec 5w40 goes on sale quite a bit.. A few years ago at Canadian tire I bought at 70% off, plus they were giving away $5 McDonalds prepaid gift cards for every $50 spent.. I bought enough oil to last me for a couple years over three vehicles..

Routinely it goes on sale for 30-35% off

You can use either VW 502 00 or 504 00 oil. VW 504 00 is even better since it's way
more demanding. While 504 00 is also appropriate for the longer variable intervals (a
Euro thing I guess), Volkswagen also recommends* the 504 00 for conventional fixed
intervals. I'd highly recommend using Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX, particularly in colder
climates:

http://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/produ...ro_LX_SAE_0W-30_Fully_Synthetic_Motor_Oil.pdf

There's lots of great reviews on BITOG. ;) On a side note, Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX
0W-30 is identical to Shell Helix Ultra AV-L 0W-30 sold in Europe, which is the current
factory fill in Wolfsburg. They no longer use Castrol.

;)

*meaning, while 502 00 is still fine, 504 00 is better

This, the 502.00 Syntec is on sale several times a year. I have an alert set up so I get an email notification when the sale is coming.

If you're looking for the cheapest oils and filters you own the wrong car, and you're asking for trouble.

Only use synthetic oil with the VW 502/505.

Not all synthetics are created equal, some are mineral based (mobil 1 valvoline, penzoil, quaker state), others ester based. Many believe the ester based synthetics are superior. My dealer sells the castrol OE Syntec for $7.25US per Q (probably equivalent to your $8.32CD per L) to encourage owners to use it (I believe castrol is a mineral synthetic/ ester synthetic blend). I recently switched to LiquiMoly an ester based synthetic made in Germany and it's been very good. Motul, and Total (French) are also ester based. Most of the ester based oils can be found on Amazon and do excellent on the extend oil changes your car is scheduled for. VAG oil is private labeled Motul.

Fram oil filters are the worst thing ever made, you can get OE VAG oil filters on Amazon from several VW or Audi dealerships that sell parts for discounted prices. I get my from a dealer in OKC.

Good luck

Weird question and probably completely ignorant but does Amazon operate in Canada? I buy liqui moly from them and it’s cheaper than it is from anywhere else. My friend is the head tech at the local dealer and he usually gives me a filter or I get one from the parts department for like 6 bucks. Another buddy has an extractor at his shop so I inspect and replace the drain plug if necessary.

I find it's cheaper and easier to just get it done at the dealer. Then again, not everyone has a trust worthy dealership.
