Oil Drain Plug life

For those of us changing our oil with an extractor, how long do you think one can go without changing the drain plug?

For example I have a little over 20k on my car. I had VW do the first change at 3k so that was the last time the plug was changed. I've done about 3 oil changes since then without changing the drain plug.

Thoughts?

I could be wrong, but i would think that if your using an extractor and never touching the drain plug that it can remain indefinitely or until a leak should ever form due to rubber seal drying out or cracking.

I agree. There is no reason why it should deteriorate. Just every once in a while give a look at the plug and see if there is any sort of residue or droplets on it. I would think it will be fine for a very long time.

if anything get a new O-ring. When it starts leaving an oil spot in your driveway replace it

The plug is like 3 bucks or something like that, just set a goal for yourself to change it every certain amount of oil changes, in my case I'm doing it every 4 , so 3 oil changes via extractor and 1 the conventional way.

I wouldn't worry about it. There isn't a replacement o-ring for the lower "arm" of the oil filter assembly, and that is getting pulled out every oil change. The only time the oil drain plug should start leaking is from ancient age. (if its not being removed and re-torqued frequently...if you pull it to change your oil, replace it every time!)

I agree, you do not have to replace the drain plug unless you see it dripping.
Ssve your money for more mods.

And since it's constantly in contact with the engine oil, that would probably take decades.
