I just ordered my second pair or ebay led's and for some reason the left one is out again. Hm.. at first I figured, what you get what you pay for, but then I noticed that it was the left one again. I went ahead and yanked the LED out and put the stock one back in. Nothing. So, if its not the bulb what can I be? Any ideas/fixes?

Get the kit from USP. I have had them on my GTI for two years not without a problem, make sure you get the full LED replacement kit and not just the bulbs.

The problem isn't the bulb. I've tried a few and none will illuminate.

you need a 6 ohm load resistor kit.. get it off amazon

But right now he has no power to the circuit. How do you deal with that? Is it true you need to reset the ECU with a VCDS.

I just noticed that you have a Mercedes Benz step-up model. How cool are those light weight internals? Too sweet. I heard this euro-only model is worth something like $40,000.

Sounds like harness damage or a bad fixture.
There is a single circuit for both lights,
harness splits to both license lights inside the rear bumper.
So if one light works and the other doesn't, the damage almost has to be
either the harness inside the bumper or a bad fixture.
You can identify which it is by first swapping the two fixtures.

No, the Vehicle Electrical System Controller J519
will shut down power to the circuit when a fault is detected,
but it will reset itself on its own when the fault is corrected.
No VAG-COM needed for that.
If one light is still working, then the controller has not shut it down
and no error code will be stored.
When the controller does shut down the circuit, it will store a fault code for the event.
Even though VAG-COM is needed to clear the stored code,
the stored code will not interfere with normal operation.

Reviving an old thread because I'm confused.

I know there are some cheap ebay solutions, but I assumed Sylvania LED bulbs would be plug and play with no hassle. I got THESE from a local auto parts store and didn't have any luck, and I haven't seen any other members using them either. Has anyone ran these and had issues?

Am I going to need resistors to make these work?

You know what they say when you assume.
They would be plug and play in the interior (vanity lights).
Not on exterior lights which are monitored for current draw.
Regular LEDs don't draw enough and will trigger a fault.

Most likely yes. There is absolutely no mention of error canceling, so most likely they are regular LED bulbs, and those would require a resistor.

bummer, but thanks for the quick response! Guess ill start with 6 ohm load resistor kit like mentioned above.

BTW That is by far and away the best mounting location for a resistor - protected from the elements
and when tucked behind the sheet metal in front of the pressure vent,
there is no way in can come in contact with the carpet covering or anything else.

Awesome. So you only need the one resistor for both license plate bulbs?
