Haldex Pump Failure

Guys, Just a heads up I've had my haldex pump fail and get replaced. On inspection the filter was 80% blocked which caused starvation and failure.

I have had haldex service completed ahead of schedule and not that long maybe 10k km later played up. I don't know what caused it to get blocked but just a heads up that can happen and to be vigilant with maintenance of it, to prevent same happening to you.

I'm not a DIY person but those that are probably not a bad idea to check/clean it yearly or so.

My car is MK7R with 50k km on it now. Probably started playing up around 35k and serviced I think at about 30k km mark.

VW's Haldex service procedure doesn't call for the pump's filter screen to be inspected or cleaned. Many (most?) VW dealers are unaware that there even is such a filter screen — and some have strenuously denied its existence.

I checked mine at about 17K miles and found it perhaps 10% blocked, so pretty good. But I've seen photos by other owners with massive blockage at similar miles, so go figure.

Urlik- Mine is a 2014 model so Like you've mentioned known to possibly fail.

I don't like spam- Initially noticed that fast take offs started to set off the traction control in upper revs. Initially only WOT or close to it in first. Then progressively same thing with less aggression. Still only in Race mode in first off mark. Since I don't do this all that often and got new MP4S tyres on front masked it for me.

NCM_ I've seen that before as go on that forum often. I wouldn't trust VW at all and either get good VAG specialist mechanic to service and maintain or DIY. Mine pretty much was like that first picture but left like that and caused failure. Clearly I'm not a lucky one as mine led to failure and I've also had the Water pump go also at 40k km mark with the plastic housing cracking. The new one no longer plastic so hopefully neither fail again and I can get back to enjoying my stage 2 R for a few years trouble free.

Just watched this DIY to get a sense of what is involved. The guy opted not to clean the pump filter citing the risk of compromising the seals and generally clear oil coming out. Those of you that have done this job -- Does this logic hold any water? Is the pump seal at all delicate or pretty idiot proof? I kind of suspect he just didn't want to bother.

Changed mine at 30k and inspected the pump. Fluid was pristine and the filter was so clean I didn’t even apply a rag to it. Mine looked like a fragile steel mesh. I would be extra careful wiping it. The other problem is that no one has found a part number for the rubber gasket so you have to re-use it, thus posing a potential issue if it breaks, cracks, etc... especially over time. Will I check it the next time I change the fluid? Probably. But I am also going to try my hardest to find a replacement gasket as well before then.

Looking at MDLBC's picture, isn't the 'seal' just an o-ring? Just replace it when you do the service if that bugs you? The benefit of knowing that the filter is clean easily outweighs the risk of oil leak.

I mean even if you did the oil service if your filter is clogged it's kind of meaningless, no? The goal is not to have the pumps fail.

The ECS website shows it doesn't fit ANY generation or year Golf R, so I wouldn't put any stock in that. I'd call ECS.

I did 10k haldex service (see here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?8908177-MK7-Haldex-Fluid-Change-DIY) and it still failed 2k later. I think the problem lies in early revisions which were probably ether defective or just a bad/weak design. New, revised version doesn't feel as snappy or engaging as the old one did. They probably neutered it via controller to last longer, IMO.
