(Posted in the 'United Kingdom' section too, but not sure if that's a section of a forum, that might only get a reply in 2yrs time 😬, but the car is sat in a local garage atm, waiting on me making a decision..)

I've had a search, and don't seem to be able to find anything , so sorry if this has been done to death...

Bit of background - My (in the UK) 80k mile ,mk7 Golf 2ltr Diesel clutch pedal hit the floor, brake fluid reservoir low, no fluid around the clutch master cylinder. Topped up and tried bleeding, get around 1" of 'feel' in the pedal, but can hear it squelching inside the box, so, I'm guessing the slave cylinder is away.

If the slave cylinder needs done, the clutch is getting done too.

I know the dual mass flywheel is a sore point on modern diesels, but know there's solid 'upgrade' flywheel/clutch kits out there.

The car is getting taken to a garage , and have said they'll fit whatever I want them to fit,
So,

Am I as well 'upgrading ' to a solid flywheel , if so, which kit ? (Links would be awesome)
Or better going for the DMF, as standard.

If its any bearing on the decision, I wouldn't mind getting it mapped in the future (upto 197hp for the 150, I believe?.. )

If you hate rev-hang get a SMF, as far as the DMF being a weak point....is it similar to the GTI? My GTI DMF is holding Vortex standard power levels so...

Cheers man!

I've been looking for a SMF, but neither me or my local garage can find one, that say they'll fit.

Not really about power levels with a DMF, more about longevity. Cars I've had in the past (Volvo mainly tbh...😬) it's the DMF thats given up the ghost before the clutch has, although they only rattled like a tin can and didn't actually stop me from getting to my destination (not hypermiling gets more life out of them, not that i do...).

I've told the local garage to get a stock DMF clutch kit ordered up and fitted, not so bad shopping about if its a project on axle stands in the garage, but need it back asap, it's done 80k miles on a stock setup, and I dont baby it, so not that bad...

Next step, rolling road and a retune though I think..

I would recommend against getting a SMF, based on a few threads over on TDiClub. It can slowly (or quickly, depending your perspective) destroy the syncros on your TDI. You'll also likely have some unpleasant noise at low speeds unless you go with a heavy SMF (somewhere around 30 lbs), in which case you may as well have gone DMF in the first place.

You're in the UK so Darkside Developments is a great choice, reach out and ask what they recommend. When it's time for me to replace mine, it will 1000% be Darkside kit unless I get stock equipment from the dealer.

Cheers, thanks for posting.

I understood , you needed a heavier flywheel on a diesel, because of the higher CR, (Force induction being less than NA, but still higher than a petrol, although, even driving a petrol with a lightened flywheel is a bit of a challenge...), but didn't realise in modern diesels the DMF is used as a harmonic dampener (my old SMF diesel cars ,where designed to run with a SMF, with a new clutch kit for under £100...)

Gearbox issues never even crossed my mind tbh...

Gone with the DMF , beginning to understand why there's not a plethora of SMF kits off the shelf!
