BBK Kits

I've been looking into BBKs recently and there's 2 that have caught my attention, the VWR BBK that sells for $2749 and the ECS Porsche BBK that sells for $2249. They are both 6-pot 352x32 and I don't know what makes the VWR so much more expensive and which one to get. Any feedback or reply would be great.

Get the VWR, as the ECS/Porsche's piston sizes probably do not fit the Golf's master cylinder !!

Same issue as on the Mk.V and Mk.VI:

They claim it to do does not mean it really fits perfectly. I'd wish ECS
(and all the other vendors) in general would publish the piston sizes.
These need to have a total piston area similar to or slightly smaller
than the stock caliper's single piston to provide same pedal travel +
improved pedal feel.
The only OE Porsche calipers that do fit a 22 or 23.6 mm MC are the
Cayman and Boxster 986 calipers.
Keep in mind some safety features like ESC and brake assistant are
negatively affected by altered pedal travel.

so VWR is definitely the way to go with this one?

At least the (Caparo AP made*) VWR caliper is specifically designed to the Golf
with its FN3 (54 mm piston) and FNRG (57 mm) calipers and 22/23.6 mm MC in
mind.
Because there are plenty of kits available for Mk.V and Mk.VI there might come
some more suitable BBKs from AP Racing, Brembo, Tarox, Alcon and others, but
you cannot go wrong with the VWR kit.

Another idea is to wait for the Brembo BBK, which is now available as a factory
option for the new GTI/R sibling named Seat Leon Cupra. This BBK seems to be
similar to the former RS3/TT-S 4-pot 370x32 mm front brakes, but modified to
fit the current MQB platform. Probably not on a par with the more expensive
aftermarket BBK regarding pad size and rotor quality, but it's OE and reliable for
winter use. In particular Chines BBKs don't like to be exposed to salt and water.

As standard the Leon Cupra comes fitted with the same 340x30 mm FNRG front brakes as both the
Golf R and GTI w/ Performance pack. Front swivels/hubs are the same as well on all three hatches.
So perfect fitment guaranteed.

btw, another nice factory option are the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R-compounds !!

* not related to AP Racing, who are also based in Britain

i've heard that VWR will be launching a new BBK for the MQB platform soon. not sure how accurate just might be something to keep in mind.

cheers!

Rotors and calipers are by far the most costly. The rest is peanuts.

At the very least you'd also need brackets ("Halter"), pads ("Bremsbeläge"), bleeder
valves ("Entlüfterventil") and hoses ("Bremsschlauch"), and probably some hardware.

To make it short and simple - get the complete stuff. ;)

Just the heat shields ("Hitzeschild") aren't essential, particularly not for track junkies, who
need all ventilation available. In such cases I stringently recommend to fit the TT-RS air guides
bolted to the lower control arms. Cheap and easy mod.

The biggest problem with the TT-S/RS3/Rear R8 brake upgrade is that if you track the car one rotor gets hot much faster than the other becuase the rotor veins vent air in the same direction for either side. If your just doing street driving this is fine, but after a 20 minute track session your car will be pulling to one side.

For the money I would suggest VWR BBK as the best option out right now.

Another two points:

1. The Cupra Performance Pack calipers have 40 + 44 mm pistons

- not ideal for stock master cylinder, requires specific ABS application

2. The new Audi TTS "8S" comes with "small" fixed caliper brakes, consisting of:

338 x 30 mm rotors + 4-pot calipers

This kit could be an OE option for those who think they don't need
oversized 355 or 370 mm rotors and/or still want to run 17" wheels.

Bruce, when you have a moment, could you post the part numbers for the left and right TT-RS air guides?

Thanks!

Depending on your current control arms some trimming may be required.
I didn't try the on the Mk.VII control arms, and I most probably won't,
as I plan to fit the Audi TT 8S aluminium control arms (lighter, stiffer,
better bushings), which most probably will match the vents without any
modification. Trimming a plastic wing is quite easy anyway.
