New tire on the way; available here in the states this March. Based on the linked article below, it's a cross between the Michelin Pilot Super Sports and Sport Cup 2's.

It's funny that I came across this. I'm in the process of purchasing tires for this upcoming track season to serve dual purpose as a daily too, and I'm undecided on the Pilot Super Sports and Sport Cup 2's.

i have killed 4 pss tires on the gti at track events. separated / delaminated the outside tread blocks. not enough camber in front. good thing my rx8 is back in service.. the cross between the pss and the cup2 sounds perfect. but am afraid to guess the cost. think i am going to run one more set of pss on the rx8 then hello 71s.

btw, seems pdx sebring long course feb 10th.

As I read in German Forums the PS4S will replace the PSS.
But the build (esp. the flank) should be nearer to the Cup tires.

If this were fact, the PS4S will be a very good sporty tire for our Golfs. :)

P.S.: the article says "succeeds" as well, just saw this. So don't call me a wisenheimer... ;)

True, PS4S will replace PSS. No substitute for the PS Cup - no way.
The PS4S is even claimed to outperform the PSS in the wet, which
makes me wonder if at the same time it could be an improvement on
dry surfaces anyway. Everything's getting better? I don't believe in
that. Would also be interesting to know available sizes, or, to be
precise, if they plan to make 225/40 and 235/40 R18. I don't want
to run 19" on a Golf.

On a side note, there's already a discussion on this tire:

As the PS4S replaces the PSS I'm pretty sure they will make 225/40/18
and 235/40/18 as well. I think - together with 235/35/19 - they will be
the most sold sizes. In Europe at least.

Sure they will be no substitute for the Cups, never. I am with you.

And I share your doubts concerning in dry and wet improvements. Both
is impossible in the same time according to my experience. But - let's have
a look on it - maybe they found the philosopher's stone...

I wonder if the pricing strategy of PS4S be more similar to PSSs(reasonable, I think) or more like the old PS2s(crazy overpriced).

I wouldn't be surprised if they add this to the lineup and keep the PSS. They are missing a product in the 200TW extreme performance summer tire class (re11, 71 etc).

If they do end up replacing the PSS with this tire, though, you can be sure that it will be more on the PSS side than the PSC2 because they probably sell 4 sets of PSS for every set of PSC2.

Its 300TW, same as the PSS.

Also I was mentioning PS2, not PS Cup 2. The old PS2 were really top rated summer performance tires, but they were really pricy compare to how PSS ended up being priced.

Where did you see the treadwear?

Also, Michellin has posted info on their site: http://www.michelinman.com/US/en/tires/products/pilot-sport-4s.html

Looks like 245/40r18 is the only 18" option currently. They do compare the treadwear to the PSS so I would expect it is also a 300.

Maody, current European portfolio is 19" and 20" only while US is
also 245/40 R18 (which has also been one of the available sizes
when the PSS started). Hope they'd do 225/40 R18 and 235/40
R18 soon, but I'm not particularly convinced they will. 225/40 did
actually come rather late on the PSS, while 235/40 actually has
been a limited number import from the US, if I remember correctly.

;)

They do their Conti ForceContact for several years, even sold in the US.

Probably hundreds or thousands for every single PSC2. :)

Again, the PS4S will replace the PSS, though they may
still sell the PSS for some transition time. ;)

Ooops. But I had a few sets of 225/40/18 on my own cars (6 R & 7 R). And I could swear that I had a set of 235/40/18 as well. And as lots of the Golf 6 R and Golf 7 R drivers I know had them on their cars I was totally convinced that both sizes would have been most sold sizes for all the hot hatches around...

Excuse me, if I was wrong. :)

But as you say 'Conti ForceContact': This tire I had in 225/40/18 and 235/40/18 for sure and it is a quite good tire for track use (esp. if the wheather is not dry and sunny) but no real semi-slick although they advertise it as such. And for that it's down too early and too expensive if you still ask for my oppinion. ;)
