because having amber taillights is not federally mandated in the US, and I assume it's cheaper to make it one color

The lights fit w/o modifications but you need to make some changes to the wiring and coding. There are different options:
- use a MK7 LED (not dynamic) adapter harness
- run wires to the BCM
- add some wires between inner and outer tails

IMO the cheapest way is to do the following. Re-pin a couple wires from the OEM plugs and add red, green and blue wires.

If there is interest I can add the wires including terminals and coding for a couple bucks.
