12/24/2018 - REWIND

So for those that don't already know - this past christmas eve something truly amazing happened, I was/am still so very humbled - I was selected as the recipient of the Unitronic Grand Prize Giveaway over on the MK7 International page!

.. I was in quite a rut when it came to cars, depressed even. You can see in my timeline here where my activity/documentation dropped off the map. My good friend nominated me as I didn't even enter the contest - didn't feel I deserved anything - still so truly humbled that this has happened!

It took a while to decide which car would be the recipient of all these wonderful Unitronic go-fast bits, and I ultimately decided BOTH our R and this #justagolf would share in the prize! You can follow here to see which parts I chose for the 1.8T and why, and you can follow my (short) progress record of things I've done to the R in it's separate thread.

12/25/2018 - My thank-you 'letter' to everyone

December 25, 2018 ·
I don’t even know where to begin.. My wife and I are truly humbled to have been awarded the Unitronic Stage 2 grand prize announced this Christmas Eve! We would like to thank Pat, Marc, and John for their amazing generosity and support within this group over the years! Thank you Domenico Paldino and the rest of the VERY hard working admins of this page/group. I’ve been a part of this group since it’s infancy before the MK7s even hit our shore, and have watched it grow from a handful of people to what it is today - truly amazing! And a special heartfelt thank-you to someone my wife and I consider family - Will Ko ❤️❤️ We met Will about 3.5 years ago at one of the largest VW car shows in Canada where we travelled over 1500kms to attend, and Will was one of the first to recognize me from the fb groups and welcome me with open arms. We’ve since gone back every year, and each year Will gathers the local R group together as a special welcome for many of us who travel from far away to the Great Canadian Volkswagen show.
A little about us for those that don’t know - I fell in love with VWs with the purchase of my first car - a 1979 Mars Red GTI back in 1995 (I paid $1100 Canadian Pesos), and have since owned many other Volkswagen’s. My wife caught the bug - pun intended, as her father’s first twenty or so cars were VW beetles. Her fondness for water-cooled VWs grew when we started dating, and she traded in her Mini for a MK5 GTI in 2011.
We came into the MK7 family literally by accident, as in 2015 our then 2013 MK6 R had been involved in a hit-and-run so we bought our 2016 R as a replacement and never looked back. With our family growing, our need for another safe and reliable vehicle was paramount so I had to let go of my MK1 Cabriolet to help fund the purchase of our MK7 golf.
Never able to leave anything stock, I’ve wanted very much to tune our cars and have had my eye on Unitronic’s offerings since they first announced their tunes a few years ago, but since adulting is sometimes hard I’ve had to forego many luxuries in favour of family and life responsibilities. This past year had been especially tight with the loss of over 4 months of income leading up to Christmas, so I sold many car parts I had stashed up including an is20 . There weren’t going to be any car parts under the tree this year. To top it all off our garage door broke about an hour before the announcement of the Unitronic prize was made *♂️. In summary I’m still in shock. Like Dom said, it’s incredible to think of going from nothing (no tune) to having Stage 2 and all the supporting mods! I’m still shaking with excitement! Thank you to all who were a part of this in some way, including all those who sent warm wishes and congratulations - thank you, it means a lot to this family! ❤️❤️

TLDR - Thanks John, Pat, Marc and everyone at Unitronic, thanks Domenico and the rest of the team that keep this group strong and amazing! And thank you again From the bottom of my heart Will Ko for the nomination as I don’t think I would have even tossed my hat in the ring - so many deserving people out there!! ❤️❤️Merry Christmas MK7 family ❤️❤️
I’ll be sure to update the group once I install everything - prob won’t be until spring as my garage is waaay too cold during the winter

Thanks as well to everyone here on the Golf MK7 page (I'm sure there is a lot of crossover between members), but I really do appreciate all the support and kind words - stay tuned!

I thought I'd take a quick moment to share a couple OEM VW accessories additions I've made.

04/26/2019 - This Little Light of Mine..

This 12V LED lamp is something I had been planning on picking up ever since I bought the car, well fast forward almost exactly three years and I finally pick one up. It's the little things.. I decided to simply keep it tucked in my armrest cubby.

04/25/16 - REWIND!

I realized I hadn't previously shared a picture of my warning triangle. I had this mounted in it's home before I drove away from the dealership when I first bought the car.. Well, three years later here's a pic of what I'm sure many of you already know what it looks like haha!

Many moons ago I also installed the Audi 12V dummy plug to go with my Leyo trim rings.. here is a pic taken almost as long ago as when I got the plug!

04/28/2019 - Inlets and Intercoolers and Charge Pipes, oh my!

Hat’s off to Unitronic and their Intercooler, Turbo Inlet, and Charge Pipe kits for 1.8/2.0 TSI Gen 3 MQB cars! People who know me know I am quite critical of aftermarket parts so when I say these pieces are spot on they are SPOT ON!

Starting with the Turbo Inlet - beautifully designed, no issues fitment and a handsome piece of jewellery under the hood.

Charge pipes and intake piping are damn near perfect - VERY OEM+, great mandrel bends in all the right places, provisions for all factory mounting including factory bushings and clip positions just like OEM, and best combination of pipe and coupler hoses I’ve seen! Only thing I prefer are OEM hose clamps and ended up using a few of my old clamps instead of the provided clamps as I find the OEM clamps smoother and more robust. (aftermarket clamps shown in these pics - will be swapping out for OEM clamps)

Intercooler - beautiful cast! Maximum use of space and very tight tolerances! I had to gently open up the mounting points for my condenser to tab in, and had to slightly trim the top clips on my rad to get it to clip in to the new Intercooler, but was easy. Once everything was buttoned back up it was SOLID! Too bad such a thing of beauty lay hidden in the depths of the rad pack..

Unitronic has done their homework boys and girls - don’t hesitate if you’re in the market! Incredible customer service to boot, hit up Pat Archambault or John Staffi they will hook you up!

When your friend is honest AF while helping you button things up. I LOL'd

well if it's ANY consolation - for a LONG time I was refusing to put anything NOT OEM VAG on this car, save for these trim rings. I am quite pleased, the quality is there and they provide great tactile sensation. The only thing I wish were different is that I wish the smaller trim rings sat a bit more flush with the face of the knobs - but based on the design of the factory knob itself there is nothing that could have been done differently by LEYO. I Love these trim rings!

And what are your intentions with that ground beef. I know it's been there since winter but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also have these if you must know..

05/04/2019 - I Can Breathe a Little Easier Now..

So like many, I too feel a few modifications to the stock intake system can yield as good, if not better flow, than many more expensive systems out there. Here's all what I have done..

Of course the obligatory 'OEM Intake Runner Block Off Plate'

followed by the sometimes controversial opening the 'Direct Path'

before

after - pretty clean cuts if I do say so myself :p

Here's a bit of a funny story - so ordered this piece a few years ago by mistake, thinking it may have been the suppression to the block-off plate most people get. Turns out it's a block-off plate of sorts for the side I just opened up - found on Bluemotion Golfs IIRC, I almost tossed it as first I thought I had no use for it.. I plan to keep a close eye on this area for the time being, and may run this plate if I feel the filter is having to work too hard or if large debris is making it's way into my lower airbox, but for now I will probably leave it off.

Next I enlisted the help of one of my favourite Master Techs to help me with the SAI hose delete..

psssh, who needs this silly thing anyways!

Now was time to put on this nifty little filter supplied by Unitronic! There, no more unsightly tubes coming off my airbox!

Can you believe I've had these AFE Dry High-Flow Filters kicking around for almost two years before I got around to installing?! I had planned to do all the airbox mods at once so I waited until I felt like doing everything.

After dropping an AFE Dry into my lower airbox, I topped it with an upper airbox from a Golf R (Which does not have SAI)

Then, to mate up to my new Turbo Inlet from Unitronic, I also swapped in an intake pipe from Uni as well - goes nicely with all my other piping!

Let's see.. Block-off plate - check. Open intake runner on direct intake path - check. SAI hose delete and filter relocation - check. AFE Dry - check. R upper airbox - check. Unitronic intake pipe - check.. I feel like I am missing something still....

Oh right! I also ended up with a new intake runner cap - one WITHOUT all those unsightly warning decals.. Sure sure, those decals can be removed with a little bit of work buuuut, I got one brand new, no decals - really helps clean up the engine bay visually! (see following posts for pics of updated engine bay)
