I'm in a similar situation, but with lots of hills. I tend to use second going down for engine braking and third going back up.

Oops, just drove it and third works fine both directions. Ignore that whole second thing.

I could probably do 6th in the TDI and idle down that road .

3rd if you are just cruising along. 2nd if you feel like you might need to make an evasive maneuver.

You should always be prepared for that unexpected pedestrian, in case they try to jump out of the way.
