Tried mounting my winter wheels and tires yesterday....I say tried because the stock lug bolts were not long enough for the threads to catch. How do I determine the proper length I need for these wheels?:confused:

Thanks....Tom

Easy, put bolt in OEM wheel, measure how much it sticks out the rear of wheel. Then put bolt in new wheel, measure how far it stick out of rear if at all................

Say for example the OEM bolt in OEM wheel sticks out 15mm & on new wheel it sticks out 5mm. You need to get new bolt which is 10mm longer than OEM bolt.............

What wheels did you get and where did you get them from? Are you using spacers? Very odd the stock lug bolts wouldn't be long enough.

Bought them used. They are 1000 Miglia aftermarket alloys, not factory VW wheels.

Yeah...I thought of that after I had the factory wheel back on the car....I was hoping someone knew how much thread needs to be showing to work properly. I'll have to take one back off.

Stock is usually 27mm long. You probably need conical (aftermarket) lug bolts not spherical (stock) and as for the length it is easy to measure if you buy yourself a $12 Chinese digital caliper on Amazon. If you are feeling spendy get a $40 OriginCal http://www.amazon.com/iGaging-ABSOL...858419&sr=8-1&keywords=Origin+digital+caliper. Just use the plunge function of the caliper and order the bolts your measurements suggest you need. A hub is usually ~10mm thick and a rotor hat is ~7mm thick. So measure the thickness of your wheel where it meets the hub/rotor assembly using the digital caliper.

Also, have a look at this.

Or you can just grab a digital caliper from Harbor Freight for like $10 when it's on sale/with a coupon

You can also check/verify by the turns/engagement of the lug bolt. Usually you want at least 8 full turns of thread engagement. TireRack says 7.5 for a 14x1.5mm bolt (which your car uses), for example

Also, DEFINITELY go get cone seat bolts....do not use the stock (ball seat) bolts with those aftermarket wheels!

ECS has lots of different length, cone seat, options:

I removed a factory wheel and measured how much was poking through, then measured the same on the winter wheels and added the difference. I ended up needing 37mm bolts. The wheels I have use ball type seat like the factory wheels. I ordered them on-line and should have them early next week. Thanks for everyone's assistance.
