What surprises me about that is that MPI would not only help combat carbon buildup, but it also provides better fuel economy at low RPM and reduces emissions. Why would VW not want that for the US market? :iono:
VW is doing MPI for Euro6 emission standard, which has specified particular emission standard. Gasoline Direct Injection is seeing the same issue when TDI first came out in that under part load operation, at lower combustion temp the fuel droplet will form at the outer bound of combustion chamber, which when burned causes particulate formation. TDI fights this with diesel particulate filter that scrubs the tailpipe emission. But thats expensive. To combat this the use of MPI uses Port Injection at low load to allow for better atomization of the fuel mixture and less chance of droplet formation. The side effect for us is that this helps wash the back side of intake valve. But since Euro6 level emission standard is not going to be applied to US for sometimes, VW is saving money by not using the MPI...
Eventually it might happen, but probably not soon...
