MIB2.5 Retrofit Sound Problem / Quality

I’ve just had the Discover Pro MIB2.5 retro-fitted to my 2016 Golf GTD. It has been coded so that everything works fine with the car but the sound quality is notably quieter and worse than my Discover Media that was originally in the car.

I also have an aftermarket (Vibe) subwoofer installed in the boot, again this worked fine with the original system but now I’ve had the retro-fit done it seems to barely pick up any signals of sound and only plays certain low frequencies of bass. The sub is working fine as I've had it checked.

Original Discover Media part number – 3Q0035874A
New MIB2.5 part number – 5NA035020D

I don’t know if the MIB2.5 needs the coding changed or something and I don’t have any coding facilities myself. Can anyone help please?

Cheers

Your original was nav with fender audio and amp? If so, are you using the MOST optic connection to feed the factory amp?

It just came with normal sound system, not the Dynaudio etc. I think the sub was wired into the back left speaker and then there is a box under the glove compartment which goes into the back of the head unit I think. I've not messed with any of the wiring and it seemed to work fine before with the Discover Media.

Which is the most optic feed for it?

Apologies but I'm not massively mechanical or technical!

The optical is the one in the middle of the back of the glove box unit. It supplies signal to the factory fender amp. It's not applicable at this point for you.

I would rewire the sub with signal from both rears or both front speakers from the back of the glovebox unit. Currently you're only getting one channel. Bass is omnidirectional but i think you're missing music with your setup.

Also the mib2.5 might be outputting lower voltage than the mib2 which i measured at around 9v with a 0db 1000hz sine wave. Maybe the newer model speakers have higher sensitivity to account for lower power driving them.

Another thought...maybe the wiring isn't the same feeding the brains. Like pos and neg are reversed.

Hey Adurm, Is there an easy switch out for the fender speakers and amp. The Dynaudio in my other Golf R is so much better, that it is distressing.

I don't know about easy, but people are doing a helix sub upgrade but can't imagine how good it really is. Audison sells a golf 7 prima kit with a dsp amp and front door drivers. They re use the tweets probably due to difficulty to access them. I think there are other dsp units out there that accept the most 150 cable as optical via converter wire. Or just change out the front speakers with something with better sensitivity. It boils down to your budget and your goals.

The Helix system is the easiest upgrade path, although you may have an underlying issue that needs to be resolved. If you go Helix... the sub, although a welcome addition coming from stock audio, is not the impressive part of the setup. You also get the Helix DSP/amp with programming specific to the car plus the benefits of more power. That's the impressive part of the system.

The Helix system can be used with your own sub, which is likely to outperform the one that comes with it. I am running the Helix DSP/amp to drive my speakers while using its subwoofer out to feed my own amp/sub.
