iPod Classic 5th Gen help

I recently got an iPod 5th Gen (The one with the hard drive in it) and when it's connected to my car i'm unable to use the seek function. I listen to trance music so most songs have at least a 2/3/4 minute intro where nothing happens so I usually just quickly skip into the song by sliding my finger along the timeline. It's the same process on my iPhone but on the iPod you press the centre button then scroll to the position you want. Is this not supported on these iPods? I have a 6th gen as well I'm currently repairing. Would that have the same issue?
