Hi Guys,

Can anyone recommend a good dealer for service and warranty work. My car is making noise when moving the steering wheel back and forth quickly as if something is loose. The sound is not very reassuring and I want to get it checked out but don't want to end up at a dealer just to say my mods caused it and would appreciate a recommendation for a good fair dealer. The car is still on stock springs and dampers but I have other suspension stuff in the front end and want to try and avoid an issue. It still has less than 14K miles and shouldn't be making noise. I also get a weird vibration and noise in the steering when turning lightly under 10 mph and my worst fear is that its the steering rack. I feel like something may just be loose but you never know.

Thanks in advance

Not a dealership but you could try Mid Island Collision on LI. The gentleman I know there said he would do warranty work for me. You can call for Brian and ask to see if they can do it.

Linden VW in Elizabeth NJ is a pretty above-average dealer for selective, cautious enthusiasts. They’re an HPA Motorsports shop and at any point you’ll see 2, 3 Golf R’s, Audi A/S3+4’s, etc etc in the work bay. Their master tech has done some awesome warranty work and performance work for me on 2 of my MK7 GTIs

Tyrolsport in Queens, NY (very reputable VW/Audi performance shop)
A2B Motorsport in Stanhope, NJ (very reputable VW/Audi performance shop - they're moving locations, call first)
Trend Motors Volkswagen in Rockaway, NJ (dealership that is mod friendly for warranty work)

Hi guys thanks for the recommendation. I actually went to VW of Huntington. The service advisor Jose was recommended to me as pretty mod friendly. He drives a MK7 himself he said lowered on coil overs and tuned. He also said the dealership is pretty mod friendly and will help as much as they can but won’t just blindly cover anything but acknowledged that a tune doesn’t relate to suspension stuff and vice versa.

My car ended up needing a new steering rack after only 13,500 miles. It’s a 2018 GTI fwiw. All covered under warranty thankfully because that part is expensive.

For non warranty work I have another indie shop that has been really good with me and are very knowledgeable and transparent with the work I have had done. It’s European Auto in Island Park

Glad you were covered man. In 2018, I had a shop botch the install on either one or both the 034 upper engine mounts and the Roc-Euro pendulum bar, and the trans casing sheared. The car was bone-stock ECU/TCU and still under powertrain warranty, but even though I put the stock pendulum bar back on before bringing it in, when VW sent out a corporate warranty claims specialist to inspect the DSG failure before approval, they denied it as being caused by improper installation of an aftermarket transmission mount. Really frustrating, as the shop I took it to is a $150/hour rate shop, and they botched a simple install. Of course that shop wouldn't help pay for the repairs. Pay to play I guess.

I think I remember reading about that happening to a few people a while back. The dealership told me that even if I was tuned, this work shouldn't have been affected but if I was lowered he may have had an issue with VW covering the warranty replacement. He also said if I was tuned and popped a turbo it wouldn't be covered under warranty but I think that is pretty reasonable from both mine and their perspectives.

Also without the warranty, this whole job would have been close to 3K for the new rack & hardware plus install and alignment so I'm very happy it was fully covered too.
