I didn't say I did it on purpose. Hard launch in manual and forget you're not in auto -- it will peg the needle.

Really? Mine has seen well over 8000 a few times during launch.

I don't know if this was the case here, but sometimes tach needles shoot beyond where they should be indicating due to the inertia of the needle itself. This will only occur when the speed of the tach movement is pretty quick, such as when revving the engine or sudden extreme engine acceleration between shifts, especially missed shifts.
