Hey y’all,
My car is due for an oil change soon and I was wondering if I should go with the 0w20 Liqui Moly oil rather than 5w40? Last oil change, i had a few 5w40 bottles left so I just used those, however I’d like to order a oil change kit from FCPEuro and do the lifetime replacement thing. My GTI’s a 2019, and they only have 0w20 for it not 5w40. My question is, should I go with 0w20? If I do, will it cause any problems as I used 5w40 last time? And if I do order a 5w40 kit, is everything needed for an oil change the same as it would be from 2018 to 2019 cars (5w40 kit ends at 2018 year for GTI)? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Go with what the manual says and you will be correct. If it says 0W - 20 then I would not go with the heavier oil.

I would use the 508/0W20. It won't hurt anything that you had 502/5W40 in there previously. The only difference is the oil...rest of kit is unchanged.

Use the oil the car is meant to use

between gti’s that need vw508 or vw502 oil, there’s one single difference. Something in the oil pump. IIRC the vw508 car’s oil pumps hit slightly higher rpm at any given moment. Or maybe it’s slightly lower? I can’t recall, but someone on here mentioned it

I have a 2020 GTI. Wife has a 2020 gli. Both cars use vw508 oil but I tried the vw502 oil in her car. Her gli didn’t like it much. Had a rougher cold start. Gas mileage in the city took a small hit too

on average oil temps in the gli with the vw502 5w40 oil ran a bit cooler by about 10-15f too

I’m also stage 1 tuned (probably should’ve mentioned that lol). Does that also make a difference?

I'm stage 1 with EQT and I run 5w-40 per Ed's recommendation. I ran nothing but 0w-20 before I tuned the car but pushing more power, especially with doing things like autocross/track, I don't feel comfortable running 0w-20 anymore. The 0w-20 would hit 230f-240f when doing runs and for an oil that's already that thin at 212f to only get thinner and thinner at higher temps doesn't seem like it would be good for the engine at all. As far as I can tell from my own researches well as talking to the techs at the VW dealership I work at the main reason they switched to these lower weight oils is for fuel economy. If you aren't tuned and you don't drive the car hard I'm sure it's just fine but I don't feel good about running it with the tune.

yeah there are 2 schools of thought on this both represented in this thread. I do worry that the guys at VAG compromised on engine protection in favor of efficiency with the switch to a lighter weight - it's not like they care how the car runs after 72000mi or whatever. I put 5w40 leichtlauf or motul 8100 in my mildly tuned 2019, hasn't blown up yet.

I’ve been doing the 5w-40 vw spec oil on my 2019 last changes just because the 0w-20 has shot up in price and is never on sale at ECS. Can’t imagine its bad since 5w-40 was the original spec before they did refresh on mk7? Same engine.
