2016 GTI takes 87 octane gas?

i read somewhere that the new 2016 GTI takes 87 octane gas. and that it's on the fuel door sticker saying 87 gas.

is this true? if so, we could save a lot on gas.

you can, but the power figures are with premium gas, so you'll lose some performance on 87. In terms of MPG, not sure if it makes any difference.

If you bought this car don't be cheap, treat it right my friend! To fill it up may be like an extra $3-$5 total, not a big deal. Use the highest octane available to you at the pump

Is it on the fuel door for real?

Well you'll save money on gas but will spend more in repairs down the road.maybe accelerate carbon buildup etc...

Pics that it's on the fuel door or I won't believe it. In any case I wouldn't put anything less than 91. I spent my money on a GTI and I'll treat it like a GTI. If I want to give my car 87, I'll buy a Honda Civic instead.

^^ I don't think I would have expected much more than that. ^^
Actually, seeing this difference in a pretty well done and measured testing procedure is pretty good to me.
I put 93 in mine.

Higher octane fuels don't burn cleaner they burn slower. They prevent knock in higher compression engines. The danger of low octane fuel is pre-detonation which is very destructive to engines. So long as the car can burn 87 octane without the pre-detonation it should be good for the engine. I'm not sure I feel 100% safe running it yet.

I've been running exclusively 91 octane because I wasn't 100% 87 octane wouldn't be harmful, if there was at all a risk the extra money was worth it for piece of mind

strange? I would think once you decide to mod you will need to run 91/93 octane do you don't go into any sort of limp mode. running lower gas will lead to issues future wise.

I don't think "cheap" enters in to the equation. People can talk money all day. It's what's in the bank that counts. If someone does a stop and go drive to work everyday, 5 days a week and can save about $20 a week, thatnumber adds up over time.

A loss of about 4 ponies is nearly negligible in my op. On the other hand, if running a lower octane will cause harm to the engine I would like to see factual data showing that with the current GTI.

Opinions are great but, facts are better.

Taken from 2015 VW GTI Manual:

"Using the correct grade of gasoline is very important to help prevent engine damage loss, the recommended gasoline octane rating for your engine is listed on a label inside fuel filler, if unleaded Premium grade gasoline is specified for your vehicle, then Volkswagen recommends using, tOP TIER Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95 RON).

Information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, please go to official Web site, the gasoline grades most commonly sold in the United States and Canada have following octane, ratings, which can usually be found filler pump, unleaded gasoline is available throughout the USA and Canada.

Do not take your vehicle to places where unleaded gasoline may not be available, you may use unleaded gasoline blended with alcohol or MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), commonly, referred to as oxygenated fuels, if the blended mixture meets following criteria, blends of gasoline and methanol (wood alcohol methyl alcohol).

Anti-Knock Index (AKI) must be 87 higher, blend must contain no more than 3% methanol, blend must contain more than 2% co-solvents, blends of gasoline and ethanol (grain alcohol ethyl alcohol).
