I went to the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show today, pretty much exclusively to get a look at the 2015 Golf R. I only went to the VW booth and bypassed everything else, and only took pictures of the US-spec 2015 Golf R and Golf R Sportwagen (not confirmed for the US). In addition, I took detailed pictures of a Golf R engine that was on display -- they might come in handy when we discuss various components and modifications.

I spoke to one of the brand managers at the show and asked about MPI -- he said we are getting it. I was allowed to open the hood on the Golf R that was on display, but not remove the engine cover. The Golf R engine that was nearby clearly had the MPI injectors.

The car on display was said to be completely US-spec. While the GTI is built in Mexico and gets a mechanical emergency brake, the R will get the electronic version because this simplifies the build process, since the German assembly line is set up for it.

In some of the shots the interior of the Golf R appears to have a two-tone leather interior -- this is due to the lighting and reflections off the seating surfaces from the bright overhead lights. The Sportwagen on the other hand does have a two-tone interior, but I couldn't get detailed pictures because the doors were locked.

I know -- that's why I spoke to the brand manager, not one of the blue-shirted reps that were everywhere. The reference to MPI is also still on the website and the spec-sheet displayed alongside the Golf R.

That sucks. The carbon buildup is a real problem. See my thread: http://www.golfmk7.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6752

Complete tear down, cleaning, and back together is about $1000. Thats a lot of jack to drop every 60,000 miles. Extended warranty does not cover it.

VW should equip your cars better and increase the price you have over there. Seems to be fair if you want it...

Pricing
Since US is a very price pressed market (perhaps the cheapest market in the world) they must do some cost cutting. In Sweden my Golf R including extras had a list price of 60.000 USD including tax in March this year. Then it contains much of equipment according to EU spec. In Germany it’s a Little bit cheaper. In Denmark Norway much more expensive!

I’ve seen many US/CA complaints about Golf R /GTI pricing at this forum......
EU guys don't understand why :D.

Carbon build up is rare over here. Haven’t heard about it for ages.

Americans like finding things to complain about despite our luck. Myself included:)

We are very good at complaining in SE. Mostly people complains/wants the society to pay for their welfare, not just their cars. The most eager complainers are often socialists, however they don’t drive Golf GTI or R.

the MK7R costs US$188,000 here in Singapore. count your blessings! :)

My God!!

Money. Production and certification costs.

Certification costs? As of mid 2015, all new cars sold in Europe must comply with the first phase of the Euro 6 emission standards. These emission requirements are even more stringent than the current EPA requirements. All Mk7 Golfs meet these requirements already. As such, even though the testing methodology is different in the EU and the US, very little, if any, alterations to the Golf R engines would likely be necessary--and definitely nothing as major as a full revision of its fueling system. The costs to certify a DPI/MPI engine are the same as for a DPI or an MPI engine, so I don't know what you're thinking with this.

Production costs? Do you think it's cheaper to redesign and build a limited number of R engines for North America than to build them on the same assembly lines without changes as the rest of the world's R's? Any cost savings from the deletion of the MPI parts would be more than eaten up in the loss of production efficiencies as well as the added development costs.

So if you're talking about money, expect that our engines will be ROW.
