The last torque converter car I drove was my Dad's 2014 Acura TL and that shit sucked. I've never had the pleasure of driving a ZF 8-speed equipped car, so with my only experience to draw from in the last 10 years being a 2011 Jetta whose 6-speed Aisin torque converter failed at 13K miles, and a really poorly engineered Acura grandpa car, with the rest being DSG / MT VWs (2011 CC/2015 GTI DSG, 2012/2015 GTI MT), I can't agree the AT is better than an MT.

But I've never driven one of the good ATs that have been produced in the last 10 years or so.

I have never even tried a DSG but they certainly have their place. I’m sure it’s a hell of ride just ripping through the gears.

I’ll gladly take a manual Lambo knowing it’s slower for that feeling you get when you perfectly nail a clean heel-toe downshift. That’s what’s it all about for me. I feel like a race car driver nailing it in the GTI I’d imagine doing it a 800+ hp car would feel even better.

We could get into semantics about the definition and function of a clutch, etc. You can still shift a DSG with your hand. There are still clutches involved. CVT transmissions are the worst, they lack fixed gear ratios altogether.

The distinction is automatic or manual, not clutch and clutchless. As aways, you're clueless and use the wrong denominator.

Yeah dude. Simply downshifting from 3rd-2nd @ 20mph to pop a turn in my own neighborhood is more fun than flooring a DSG car. Generally, the engagement of driving manual is just simply more fun lol.

I also really love how much better the gas mileage is. My last car was a FWD DSG GTI and my current car is an AWD 6MT Alltrack (so 1.8/IS12) and I get identical gas mileage in all driving scenarios to my GTI, and this car has APR Plus and runs safely on 87 octane.

Before I went APR Plus a month or so ago, the Alltrack got ~10-15% better gas mileage than my GTI did. It was pretty awesome getting BETTER mileage, running cheaper fuel (even for the first 60K miles of stock driving, I was always a Shell 93 only guy on my GTI), on a heavier car, with AWD.

CVT > MT > AT > DSG.

Change my mind.

I will tell you that Subarus CVT is fantastic in the beach and in snow. Always delivering power and torque in a usable way. Now, we gave my son my wife's old 2010 outback when he got his license, so I wanted to make sure he knew how to handle the car in emergency situations, so we autocrossed it a few times. In that setting, it was just terrible. Lots of noise, little movement. They're best when driven in a very relaxed manner, which is the way my wife drives. The pace her GLC300 could belt out was lost on her and she liked the Subaru better, 4 matic was terrible in sand. I hear the 2.4T in the Outback is quick, but is let down by the CVT. The 2.5l is lazy and slow, so it fits the CVT's character perfectly. Give it gas, keep the revs at 2500 and it's quiet and smooth. Anything more that that and it get's noisy in a terrible way and doesn't really accelerate much faster.

I only run Chevron 93 octane with techron. I wouldn't dare put any other piss water in my gas tank.
Shell is better!!

Any top tier brands additive package is going to be good. I try to avoid old gas stations that likely get water contamination into the tanks, especially 93 Oct, which tends to sit longer in the stations tanks before pumped into you tank.

It's like zrickety doesn't know that the only thing that make BP gasoline, BP gasoline is the additive package. All the trucks line up at the refinery and get the same basic gas, though there are different requirements for transportation and contents, for certain regions. We'd save a fortune if we unified gas standards federally.

BP killed the Gulf. Domestic terrorists, like you.

Lol, now you're against drilling for oil. Got it. Want to see the massive list of oil spills by company? You really are ill equipped for any intelligent, meaningful discussion on any subject. It's impressive.

The sweet young thing I married 37 years ago always drove a stick. Well until she shattered bones in her left foot. I had to buy my first automagic so she would have something to drive. Bought a 1999 4Runner for her. So once she heals up she says I'd want to drive a truck. So she is back in her Acura Integra happily shifting gears & I'm driving her truck. Fast forward a year or so & she shatters the bones in her left foot again. After that she has driven automagics exclusively. Getting old isn't easy.

argued with my dad today.

He wanted to be clear that all of our hometown is boarded up. He is your typical brainwashed conservative who has ZERO wiggle room for questioning the great american narrative. Bring up something like 'oh, i don't know, maybe there is something to climate change...' or 'i think it's within the realm of possibility the earth is more than 2000 years old and we are descendants of primates' means you are 100% a democrat who wants to just DESTROY everything that America is good for.

I said simply, why in the world would people be boarding up our hometown? It's a small town, and i don't think there are any black people for cops to kill. I just dont understand.

He goes, "they expect democrats to riot everywhere! because of the voting, that's why!'
me: I can't believe the riots that people are willing to believe will happen, or actually make happen, because they think either a douchebag or a turd sandwich being elected actually drives any meaningful negative change.
me: That's like blaming a bad tail light on the reason your 1970 ford pinto is a piece of shit
Dad: Their democrats have you not learned anything i ever taught you?
Me: They're*.
Republicans do it too, it's societies easy way out of critical thinking - scapegoating. All the president does is relay the bad news of all the flawed systems he doesn't directly control, hence the perpetual 'blame the last guy' attitude that's been around since clinton.
Dad: 'I'm glad you don't vote'
Me: "You realize i didn't vote democrat, right??"
Dad ---

FWIW i can no longer classify myself as conservative, liberal, libertarian, socialist or otherwise. I take the good and bad from everything and just like to bust his balls
