DRLs and Fog lights

Hello all! I have a 2017 GTI mk7 (new to the boards) - I’m looking to see if it’s possible to have my DRLs and fog lights running at the same time? I have the Carista app and it doesn’t seem like it supports that?

Do you have state safety inspections there, because that's illegal. The cops should know that too, so it gives them an excuse to stop you.

It's possible to set things up that way. You'll need a Euro light switch and you'll need to do some coding with OBDEleven or VCDS. I have mine set up that way.

Can be done with just coding. No light switch required.

I have mine on with DRLs during daylight. But off by default at night, when the low beams are on. I prefer to manually control them at night.

Ah okay! So how do I go about doing that? I’m new to this kind of stuff unfortunately lol. I have an iPhone too so I don’t think I can use they ODB thing.

I have a VCDS cable that I use with my Windows laptop. You could also get an Obdeleven Pro and a cheap Android device.

Wow, that didn’t take long at all

That’s how I have them as well, our fog lamps are so mild that they do not blind oncoming drivers.

I just did this using OBDeleven, no switch required. I also changed it so my DRLs dont turn off with blinkers. This is if you have the lighting package of course. I will screenshot my settings as I can't find the thread I used to set it all up.

This is the only setup I got to work on my car with the Lighting Package.

So this will take care of the fog lights turning on with DRLs:

1. Select Central Electrics (address hex09)
2. Select Security Access
3. Enter magic number 31347
4. Select Adaptations
5. Search for Leuchte12NL LB45 (this is the Leuchte-set for the left-side fog-light)
6. Select Lichtfunktion B 12
7. Only if the existing Setting is not active, change to Tagfahrlicht
8. Execute change by pressing the green tick
9. Search for Leuchte13NL RB5 (this is the Leuchte-set for the right-side fog-light)
10. Select Lichtfunktion B 13
11. Only if the existing Setting is not active, change to Tagfahrlicht
12. Execute change by pressing the green tick
13. Exit OBD11 software

And then this will prevent the DRLs turning off with blinkers and the DRLs dimming with the fog lights on:

+1

I think the DRLs are actually brighter than the fogs. Dont see them as a hazard in the daytime. Plus nowadays I see many cars with DRLs located in sorts of places on the bumper and Im not sure if they’re fogs or not.

Exactly. The fogs are more decorative than they are functional.

No they are not, they are angled down and designed specifically for fog. In the rain with damp roads they do dazzle oncoming drivers in the reflection. Get on the floor and look up into them and you will see how bright they are.
