In December last year, had some really bad cold starts; car would choke itself out and not start. Best way I can describe it is the knocking/choking sound of an engine not getting fuel or trying to start a 2-banger with no choke.
  • Went in for a full carbon clean in January. Eliminated the bad starts but still idled down a bit rough.
  • Bad starts came back in February after some long commutes, was touch and go, finally replaced the PCV valve in May which eliminated the problem again.
  • Cut to today after work, car was idling rough right before shutoff. Went to restart it and it choked itself into a stall. Might be acting up again after the long drive on vacation (almost 2,000km in total).
Not an expert, but at this point I think its one or a few failing fuel injectors. Not a single fault code the whole way through, except for a cylinder misfire on 3 that was resolved with the new PVC. Hopefully I can get it into the shop this week to diagnose. Hard to pinpoint when I can't replicate it and only happens when it wants to.

Edit; attached video, a little hard to hear.
Edit; I replaced the HPFP and this problem seems to be resolved. See later posts, pump was 60k miles used which is roughly half of what mine was.

Shop got back to me and diagnosed the startup issue. Few misfires on cylinder 3 during startup that clears up too quickly to throw a code. Idles smooth, runs smooth and fuel trims are perfect under load. Checked crank case vacuums/rail pressure and everything is fine, so their best guess is a failing injector on cylinder 3. Only place they can source them is VW and they've become crazy expensive this past year, mech was a bit surprised as they've jumped up to about 500$ CAD per injector..

If anyone has a better source/opinion on replacing (or fixing) injectors, open to suggestions. Located in Southern Ontario for any local sources as well, I dropped the prices below from ShopDap and FCP Euro below for opinions.

Cheers and TIA lads 👌

BIG OL' EDIT
For those who ever need the information.. I'll post my rabbit hole below.
TLDR; For a stock 2015 GTI, you can either go with 06A906036Q (OE) or Bosch 06A906036Q (MFG #'s 62840/62141)

Hi, I hope you're well, I'm just looking for part number compatibility for feul injectors. VW recommends 06A906036Q for my 2015 GTI (OE part number) but your webpage indicates it's not compatible with my engine. I'm seeing on your webpage that the 06L906036AH is recommended. Can I get some clarification on the difference?
(09:05:07)S
For reference, the Bosch equivalents are MFNG numbers 62840 and 62835 respectively.

Hello and thank you for contacting FCP Euro! I'm not too sure what the difference between the two would be, but if you have the VIN for your vehicle, I can certainly confirm which you need and if there's an error with our catalog.
(09:07:00)S
No problem, give me a second to pull it.

Awesome, one moment while I take a look here
(09:12:48)Vincent S
Based on the VIN, you would need 06A906036Q
(09:13:24)S
Alright, is that an error on your webpage then? My 2015 isn't listed on the page for that PN
(09:14:38)Vincent S
I'm not too sure to be completely honest. Both part numbers do show as being correct for a 2015 in VW's database here, just based on your VIN you would only be able to use 06A906036Q
(09:15:50)S
Seems strange, the VIN lookup eliminated the AH PN and only identifies the Q for 2015? (Just to confirm).
(09:16:25)Vincent S
Correct
(09:16:40)S
Alright, thanks for the clarification, much appreciated.
(09:17:07)Vincent S
No problem! Is there anything else I can help you with at this time?
(09:17:24)S
Nope that's it, thanks again for the help.
(09:18:23)Vincent S
Any time! Thank you again for contacting FCP Euro! Have a great day and stay safe!

Need to confirm Bosch part number, as the OE numbers on the website were confirmed to be wrong.

VIN: 3VWTT7AU3FM025282
Vin lookup states 06A906036Q is the part number I need for injectors, however your webpage states it's not compatible for 2015. Your website recommends 06L906036AH for 2015. When Vincent looked through the VW database, both P/N's show up as compatible, however the VIN check only lists the Q part number. Ultimately, Vincent suggested I go with the Q part number.

I now need to get clarification on the Bosch part number (as the OE is extremely expensive). Can you please confirm if Bosch 0261500585 (recommended on your page for 2015) or the Bosch 06A906036Q is what I need (the OEM 06A906036Q equivalent stated for 2017 and up on your page). Thanks in advance, sorry for the wall of text.

Thanks!

06A 906 036 Q is in fact the correct part number you need per your VIN! We'll need to update the fitment guide on that for your vehicle. I do apologize for any confusion. https://www.fcpeuro.com/Parts/Fuel-Injector/?keywords=06A906036Q Audi VW Fuel Injector - Bosch 06A906036Q is the compatible Bosch part number.

I attached the diagram from your VIN below.

Small accessory update, realized my passenger doesn't have a place to 'plug in' to charge since the Motorolla wireless AA dongle uses up the USB charging port. Bought a few charging options to see how they look in the cabin. Anker charger caught my eye with the red accent. I think I'll stick with it for a bit even though it's quite high out of the port. Also got some adapters for USBC for flexibility. Links below;

Dongle came up for sale on classifieds. I thought it was a scam (new account) but it showed up and everything is there.
Won't know if it powers up until I install the helix this weekend, so I guess we'll find out. May be able to revitalize the 'Canada Rental Thread' since the current active thread doesn't ship to Canada..

Besides trapping dust and dirt, are the slots meant to hold coins? Would be cool to see someone do something useful with that area.
I have my business cards in the front slot, and sometimes a quarter in the front coin slot. Some grocery stores around here still require a refundable quarter to use a shopping cart.

Other than that they're kind of useless. Did some preliminary research to figure out if a Golf R centre console could be swapped in but I think they're built differently.

Installed the Helix today. Really solid improvement and fills out the cabin with sound. Can't really describe it well but overall it's definitely an improvement.
Programming is 100% necessary. It may come pre-programmed but it's for sure not programmed for a 2-door. Tried file 56 and 96 (low output) and it might just be placebo, but I think 56 is slightly better. Overall sound was leagues better after programming.
Going to do a picture dump below, the process isn't very different from 4-door, just one less trim piece. This won't be a comprehensive install guide, just some photos for the 2-door. I highly recommend reading up on Stealth GTI's article and watching the 2-part videos from this YouTube channel. Also plenty of information on this sub for the install.

Also, new injectors went in. Didn't solve the problem.
Found this thread, sounds like exactly the same problem.

Not sure what it could be at this point. Maybe LPFP sensor? Only happens if the engine is 'warm'. For instance, If I'm out driving, park and go into the store, then come back out to leave, it will crank and try to restart itself on fail. No codes or dash lights.

Note to self after a bit more reading.
Edit; I replaced the HPFP and this problem seems to be resolved. See later posts, pump was 60k miles used which is roughly half of what mine was.

They are very different, Golf R having EPB. Everything from the side "wing" trim pieces through the vent assembly in the back is different. As are the prices you can't see... bolts to attach to the body, the air guide that feeds the rear vents, harness (length) for the 12V plug.

That being said, you can retrofit EPB, along with the console. Would be a pretty unique mod for a 2D Mk7 in the US.

Went to Fan Expo in Toronto yesterday, so got about 4 hours in the car with it. I don't think I initially gave it enough credit, maybe because expectations were so high. Overall its a nice clear sound and it doesn't distort at higher volumes as it typically would. I have the bass only set to +1 now and you can still feel it in your chest, but not too obnoxious. I can only really compare to the Monsoon system that was in my Mk4, nice little system for what it was. Not sure how this compares to Fender or Dynaudio.

Also, here's the only itasha worth taking a picture of from FanEx
