Golf R Extended oil consumption during track days

I have experienced extended oil consumption during “hot” track days with hard heavy braking. I use oil with spec. VW 504.00/ 5w-30. As someone mentioned on this forum “if you don’t notice high oil consumption in Golf GTI/R on track, you don’t brake hard enough…” Last track day I visited was about a week ago. I have never seen any warning CEL about low oil level or pressure, just checking the dipstick.

Yesterday I removed the two hoses connected to the bottom of the intercooler. This is the lowest point of the inlet system. I was curious if there was a large amount of oil stored in the bottom of intercooler/ pipes/hoses. From what I have read on this forum, you could expect that.

I was amazed, just a thin oil layer / film. Very clean, no “sludge”. At the bottom of the lowest point about a teaspoon which is more or less what you expect to find in any turbo car with “integrated crankcase breath”.
As you probably now, the standard PCV oil separator / crank case ventilation/ is mounted at the top of the engine connected to a hose which is fastened to the intake just before the turbo.

I cleaned the hoses/pipes. What to do next? Since I haven’t found any oil stored in the system (more or less), I can’t expect a Catch can tank /system/ to collect anything. My guess it would be empty or perhaps 100-300 ml, not worth it. I can buy an new OEM PCV valve latest edition, would that make any difference?

FYI the Golf R 2014 doesn’t consume any big amounts of oil during daily mixed driving. Did a test a couple of months ago (off the track season :D), 250 ml consumption during 4000 km which makes far below 1 litre of 10000 km distance.

I read the tread about VWR Catch can the other day. Also found some info on their website.

This seems to be most relevant alternative. However I doubt that this is the solution since I haven’t fond much oil leftovers in the system.
Your last posting in the VWR tread:

I haven’t seen any details about how to solve the removal of window cleaning tank?
My Swedish car with "Winter pack" looks like this, rather big tank, perhaps the same tank in all R:s:

But you'd be burning it off on hard corner/braking. There are videos, big puff after every corner. I'll see if I can find some.

And your right about the loss of the upper tank, but the lower tank must be huge cause I've still never seen the low fluid light, on either R, granted I top it off every month while I'm checking the catch cans.

And your upper tank, does look bigger, at least the top view than the upper tank on the R's. If the lower tanks the same though, it's gotta be huge. I'll try and posts some pics later for ya bud

Generally I'm not a fan of using high viscosity oils on the EA888 for daily driving, however did
you consider using e.g. a 5W-50 or similar with VW 502 00 spec during the track season yet?

Braking / Cornering - For the moment I’m running on Michelin PSS but in a week or two they will be replaced by Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, (the PSS successor). In my case the oil consumption is mainly related to braking, (very sure :)). The cornering velocity is not a problem with PSS. Perhaps it would if I had genuine R-tyres, but that’s not the case.

My tank is also in two parts half way down. Didn’t know so I just checked it out. If you loosen the nuts / screws holding the upper part of tank, can you just pull it up then?

Very interested of seeing your tank solution.

From what I know the engine is basically built for 5w-30 oil. Therefore I haven’t changed spec.. As you say it’s an alternative.

Alright bud here's some pics of the vwr catch-can setups, pics of either car in no specific order, I hope :)

The last few pics are just the upper oem windshield washer tank, one off of each car, just to be clear, hope any of it helps.

I'm a fan of them, they are stupid expensive but they do, do more than just a catch-can also, as you already know. Maybe it would help/solve your issue bud.

Tanks for the update!!!!

When I look at your pics I understand how the solution regarding the washer tank is solved with the extra black filler unit connected to the lower part of the tank.

Great help!

I thought the Rs came with 5w40 not 30

In Europe they come with 5w-30 as default.

Ya, it's funny, picture a Red Bull can with the top 15% of the can cut off. The only little complaint I have is, if you ran the lower tank empty, it'd take forever to fill. Because you're filling it up a shot glass at a time, then that little Red Bull can "burps" then fill, burp, fill, burp and so on. Some fluid dynamics guy could explain it better but I think ya get the point lol

I just fill em all the time, as I'm always putzing under the hood :)

I track my R hard and was at Donnington at VAGtuner 2017.
I've run a VWR catch can on my stage 2 R and it's a must if you're tracking the car.My oil consumption is pretty negligible and I run standard Synta Longlife 3 in between dealer oil changes....works a treat, Hottest I've seen is 120 degrees.
