I have experienced extended oil consumption during “hot” track days with hard heavy braking. I use oil with spec. VW 504.00/ 5w-30. As someone mentioned on this forum “if you don’t notice high oil consumption in Golf GTI/R on track, you don’t brake hard enough…” Last track day I visited was about a week ago. I have never seen any warning CEL about low oil level or pressure, just checking the dipstick.
Yesterday I removed the two hoses connected to the bottom of the intercooler. This is the lowest point of the inlet system. I was curious if there was a large amount of oil stored in the bottom of intercooler/ pipes/hoses. From what I have read on this forum, you could expect that.
I was amazed, just a thin oil layer / film. Very clean, no “sludge”. At the bottom of the lowest point about a teaspoon which is more or less what you expect to find in any turbo car with “integrated crankcase breath”.
As you probably now, the standard PCV oil separator / crank case ventilation/ is mounted at the top of the engine connected to a hose which is fastened to the intake just before the turbo.
I cleaned the hoses/pipes. What to do next? Since I haven’t found any oil stored in the system (more or less), I can’t expect a Catch can tank /system/ to collect anything. My guess it would be empty or perhaps 100-300 ml, not worth it. I can buy an new OEM PCV valve latest edition, would that make any difference?
FYI the Golf R 2014 doesn’t consume any big amounts of oil during daily mixed driving. Did a test a couple of months ago (off the track season
), 250 ml consumption during 4000 km which makes far below 1 litre of 10000 km distance.
