this is great news

The DQ381 is also in the MK8? That hasn't changed? Just curious with the new rear diff, if there was any changes required, maybe revised transfer case
Yes, they're still using the DQ381 thank goodness. Not sure about the rear diff, I assume the parts are worth the R&D because the front diff is used from 2018-> 2022+ and the rear should fit any Mk7/7.5.

ya it sounds more like the the only issue between MK7/7.5 using the rear diff is software that will make it likely impossible - which is fine but mechanically up to the rear diff sounds the same.

Still too early to tell I think, not enough good marketing-free info. But it sounds like a pretty different design in order to split torque to each wheel with a real electronic diff so I'd doubt the gen5 stuff will work.

MK8 R rear AWD unit picture posted by another forum member here:-

No Haldex on the MK8? | Page 2 | GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum

MK8 R has two VAQ units, one for each rear stub axle....basically the front of the AWD system is the same as previous on MK7....Now instead of the cardan shaft going into the VAQ unit, then into the bevel gearbox with open diff to split the drive to the left & right wheels....the cardan shaft now goes straight into the bevel gearbox WITHOUT an open diff & splits the drive to the left & right wheels, with a VAQ unit on each drive coming out of the bevel gearbox. All three units are bolted to each other to make one big "transfer box".

On a dry track with both the front & rear axles having the same good grip, the MK8 R is still limited to 50% max torque to the rear due to the way the front transfer box splits the drive & the fronts having the same grip. Also as the front axle & cardan shaft always rotate at the same speed the only way to get the rear axle to appear to have more torque & more spin speed than the front axle is to brake the front wheels.....this is presumable why the MK8 R now has bigger discs at 357mm & two piston brakes..the electronics will be using the front brakes a lot!

Got some insight on when these should be made available from wavetrac. Looking to have these available end of Q1 2022 (late feb, or march)!

Following up to this it's definitely not available yet and guess it was a really rosey shipping date from their sales rep. If anyone is interested you can reach out directly to them via e-mail and get in a pre-order for when they do eventually ship.
