Is there a difference between the R's backup camera and the GTI's? The GTI's camera is great! pretty clear visuals.

I use the parking sensors more than the backup camera. The backup camera is used for a quick glance at whats right behind the car, but I still physically turn my head to check the surroundings.

I'd say it's really good. The lines don't bend like in some cars when you turn the wheel to indicate pathway but it works wonderfully even at night. And igeak691 is right it's just supplemental vision. I actually have the park assist which isn't too bad either as I do a lot of parallel parking.
