Wondering if they don't have any brand new engines in stock ? Seems strange they're offering you a re manufactured. I would expect them to be bending over backwards, 'new' engine and some compensation for all the inconvenience. That or a new car !

VW corporate made it sound like they do not but I want to ask the dealer today.

Going to call up corporate again today to try to push back about the engine before it is too late.

If you take a re-manufactured engine on a brand new car your depreciation will be catastrophic right from the start due to numbers not matching. Ask them how public they want this to get and if they still give you the run around get a lemon lawyer.

You would never know unless you looked at the carfax.

The depreciation on a new car is already catastrophic, but I do agree that having an engine replacement on record is less than ideal.

Honestly, on a new car, I would demand a NEW engine or a NEW car.

Refurbished is good but never great, ive have bought many things refurbished (such as GPUs, Power supplies) and while they did work, they did generally fail earlier or have issues far more than new ones.

He will be at a disadvantage if he wants to mod, since the engine is "used" who knows why it was rebuilt or what issues it had.

You can't compare refurbished electronics, to refurbished mechanical parts. Now if you were talking about control units, then your analogy would work. A better example would be buying a refurbished HDD. If they replaced the heads and platters, well it's a brand spanking new HDD at that point, just costs less.

The only thing I can think of is that they're possibly rebuilding your current engine but that doesn't make sense with an exterior oil leak that requires an engine replacement.

When this is all said and done you should share the paperwork they give you that goes over what work they performed. I'd be really curious to see what was done.

Re-manufactured is different then refurbished. If this is correct this sounds more positive

Remanufactured Engines vs Rebuilt Engines
A remanufactured engine is remanufactured to the original blueprints and exact specifications, and is tested to original equipment standards.

A rebuilt engine, the repair is done up to the level of failure. This directly means that the engine has been repaired up to the level of failure for which there was a need of rebuilding; but apart from that, components are left intact. The testing procedure of rebuilt engine depends upon the individual rebuilder from whom you are getting the job done.

In this case, I can think of no reason for a replacement engine other than a cracked block. I don't believe any dealer that tells me they can't find where it's cracked.

Specialist could not determine where the leak was either , seems to be seeping out of the block. To me it sounds like a hairline crack as they originally suspected.

Got so more info about engine replacement, if the car is unsold and needs a new engine they are legally required to put in a new engine, once sold re-manufactured is acceptable. Re-manufactured sound like it is used block with new parts.

Re-manufactured engine is back ordered so have some time. Waiting for corporate to call me back to push more.

Youd think vw would do the right thing in an extreme case like this. 1 week of ownership?!? I'm so pissed for you.

Having to wait at all for an engine on a 1 week old car is unacceptable.

I would push for a buy back/ replacement.

You cant lemon law the car yet because it does not meet the requirements as they have not even begun the "first repair".

What they should do is put you in a 2018 SE.

:( hope that is not true. figuring it is going to be close to 30 days as is. They did say it will only take a day or two to install which surprised me.

You'd need at least 2 repair attempts (maybe 4) to lemon law the car in CA, it looks like.

Lemon law is not really for one off situations, its for problem cars that cant be fixed properly for whatever reason after X number of repair attempts.

https://www.dca.ca.gov/acp/pdf_files/englemn.pdf

Now, if your "new" engine gave you trouble and you kept having to bring it in, and they could not fix it. You'd then have a potential lemon.

Lemon law cars and rebuilt/salvage cars have been very popular on youtube, "Samcrac" had an interview with a popular lemon law lawyer that might explain more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CMuolcneuM

I would think there may be some sort of local or state law that aides with Lemon Law cases that may help you. Not full on lemon laws, but something related to sales. Either way, I don't think it would hurt to have a lawyer in your ear. It may be just the coercing VW needs to step up and just give you a new vehicle. Additionally, I've always found social media to be very helpful in getting my point and concerns across not only to them (the business), but all future customers who visit that businesses' social media page. It's very important to remain levelheaded and well mannered when taking that approach.
