Perhaps they will install a larger Soundaktor to counter this. ;)

For some reason I find this post very funny.

Eventually our Soundaktors will be massive and fit in the trunk link a subwoofer.

Its going to either completely kill the need for a Golf R or the Golf R will have to be priced much less than the S3.

Expect the 8V S3 to be priced from about $38k USD, no more than $40k MAX. That will murder any sales of the Golf R considering it is already priced at $34k-$38k.

OR the Golf R will have to be priced from say $30k-$35k. With the GTI still in the $25k-$30k range.

the s3 will be more than 40k. based on TTS pricing, competition pricing, pricing of the golf R, i'm willing to bet it'll be 41-42k.

I assume the S3 won't even come to the US. The last one didn't right?

The S3 has already been confirmed for US sale in at least Sedan body style. Even the RS3 is in question at this point as well...

Now, as for pricing. Here is why I say what I say about that.

Pricing for the new 8V S3 3-Door was already annouced at 38,900 Euro (Germany).

Just using other VAG models and comparing prices between the two markets we will see it is roughly a 1:1 pricing ratio, or less most times. Examples;

GTI
- From $23,995 USD
- From 27,700 Euro (Germany)
USD:Euro = 0.86:1

S4
- From $47,600
- From 54,900 Euro (Germany)
USD:Euro = 0.86:1

8P A3 Sportback 2.0T FWD MT
- From $27,270
- From 30,300 Euro (Germany)
USD:Euro = 0.90:1

And typically the US-Spec cars have more standard equipment too.

Based on this, and every other possible pricing comparison between the German market cars and US market cars, you would find that it is between 0.85:1 and 0.90:1 when priced in the two markets (regardless of currency exchange rates).

The 5-Door is only priced at 500 Euro ($500 1:1) more than the 3-Door in A3 form. The same should be true for the S3.

And even going to the UK (since the MKVI Golf R is no longer on the Euro websites);
- MKVI Golf R 5-Door - 31,770 GBP
- 8P S3 5-Door - 31,840 GBP

In the UK at least, the Golf R and S3 ARE priced the same...

The worst case 1:1 (me being conservative) pricing ratio would lead us to believe the S3 Sportback to be priced from appx. $39k. More accurately at the 0.85-0.90 pricing ratio (as is the case with ALL other VAG models) it would be closer to $36k/$37k.

audi TTS:
46,500 euro
47,350 USD

47,350/46,500 = 1.02

also, don't european prices already include tax? so the difference between the US:Euro pricing is actually higher multiple than the calcs show.

also,

s5:
58700 euro
50900 euro
.87

s6:
72900 euro
71900 usd
.99

s7:
79900 euro
78800 usd
.99

s8:
111900 euro
110000 usd
.98

so prices are all over really, and impossible to determine from a simple multiple. the S cars do seem to hover closer to 1x, exception being the S4/S5 (same platform). consider that this redesign might move the cost of the S3 up a bit from its current german price of 39050 euro... i stand by my previous assumption.

The MBQ platform is 20% cheaper to manufacture than the current platform of the S3. I expect the price to remain largely the same. And considering the NEW 8V S3 pricing has already been released at 38,900 Euro. We KNOW its not more expensive than the 8P generation car which was priced from 39,030 Euro (albeit in Sportback form).

One last 'calculation' to show the relativity between the markets...

B8 S4 - 54,900 Euro (Germany)
8V S3 - 38,900 Euro (Germany)

In the German market the NEW 8V S3 is priced at 70.8% that of the B8 S4 price.

The US-Spec S4 is priced from $47,600. 70.8% of that is $33,727.

Pretty shocking, I know. Expect the S3 to be priced from $36k-$38k. I will stick with that. The evidence is good and that is conservative.

except tt.

i will change my estimate to 40k though. might not be 41-42, but i don't see it being much under 40. throw in the destination charge and i think it'll hover right at that mark.

Exceptions don't prove the rule but I will go with $38k-$40k, depending on the equipment they give us. And it is just too early to tell. Only the S3 Sedan has been confirmed for the US market and only the 3-Door pricing has been released.

$37,600 with a $895 dest. charge would be my best guess. Exactly $10k less than the S4 with the standard Audi destination charge.

Also this, its main competitor;
BMW 135i - From $39,300
BMW 135is - From $43,250

$40k would be a safe/conservative guess.

Either way, $40k OR SO, for a 300hp, Quattro AWD, 3,200 lb Audi S3 will be amazing. The A3 Sedan is said to be the physical size of the B5 generation A4 but even lighter due to the newer lightweight materials, smaller motors, and MQB platform.

B5 S4 - 250 hp 2.7T - 3,600 lbs = 14.4 lbs/hp
B5 RS4 - 375 hp 2.7T - 3,700 lbs = 10.0 lbs/hp
8V S3 - 300 hp 2.0T - 3,200 lbs = 10.6 lbs/hp

WOW!!!

they disprove the rule though.

either way, i'ld probably go for the golf R and save bunch of $$ unless it ends up weighing an extra 200 lbs. plus i would take a hatch over a sedan. probably that's how they will distinguish them here. audi S3 will be only sedan form while the golf R will be the hatch choice.

The rule proves the rule. Exceptions neither prove, nor disprove it. They are exceptions. Outliers. If you really wanted to average ALL Audi models US/Euro pricing you would find an average of about 0.93 (I did it... And most of ours have MUCH more standard equipment too).

The R will not cost any less (as it doesn't in Europe as it is) and it will not weigh more (as they are virtually the same car) but the S3 could be Sedan only with Golf R hatch only (of course).
