Can this connect to anything that needs data from ecu or do you have to use Simos tool.

I would love to have more & higher frequency data, but would need it to work with something like track addict.

Also, I know Diggs mentioned somewhere to get the original device. Does it matter or are the other ones replicas that aren't as good?
There were some issues for a long time getting fake CAN chips due to global shortage but that got sorted. You can hit up Switch, buy from sparkfun, or from 8bit (those are switches BTW, you're just paying more for it to buy from 8bit. He's a good tuner though.) Currently direct from Switch is the cheapest as it includes shipping.

Also, I used one of these at VIR in Feb @DerHase let me try. I fucked it up b/c I forgot I had turned it on and was like "why is my cruise on" right before I went out on track so accidently turned it off :ROFLMAO:

If the A0 firmware is loaded you can use savvycan, torque app or other odb2 BLE apps. The SL1 is the same if not better quality I'd say as the A0, Switchleg does great work and I've had no issues with my SL1.

For track addict and other apps, your best option is OBDLink MX or similar.

If you unlock the ECU and run the 3E logging patch, can you use the programmable "custom PID" functions in Racechrono/Torque with a standard ELM dongle?

I'll have to see if I still have mine and maybe check for science.

Yes, you can use HSL with obdlink MX and racechrono-- I've done it. In this case you need the MX and not just any generic tool, because you use some of the extended commands. It's a bunch of work to set up, but it definitely is possible. I had a video on here at some point doing it, logging steering wheel angle, brake pressure and such with racechrono. Might even be able to use the car's internal accelerometers for the video overlay.

If you wanna give it a go, get me a list of <20 params or so you want to log and I can work on making a profile for it.

the original firmware is open source and there are likely other tools that can use it. vw_flash was the original tool this effort was based on and should still work fine (but is not an iOS/android solution). IMO if you want to use another mobile app, generally the elm327 platform has a bit broader support (e.g. obdlink mx+).

IMO the original is a bit nicer (very slightly simpler firmware updates) but the idea of using an open source board is that you can source them from anywhere. just beware that the one vendor mentioned in the other thread has been known to scam buyers (fstuned/glis38tx/tim masker).

But if you flash it via SimosTools with the 3E high speed logging patch, it allows open communication to the rest of the powertrain canbus which allows you to pull these things over the data link connector at the same time(edit: and this is a very shortened list - there are many other things I just plain don't need to log such as ethanol content since I don't run it):

Some of that is also from the map switching and traction control patch which has been set up for logging certain parameters for diagnosing within those added in features.

FWIW I was trying to find a simple OBDII overlay solution almost a year ago as well and tried some other app, but ultimately it's crap vs SimosTools.

Wastegate adaptation, anyway to view where it's at on simostools? I can run the adaptation, says complete, but no idea where it sits voltage wise (iS20 style wastegat). I won't get into how obdeleven fucked me over, otherwise I would use that to view
