While all of my modifications so far are aesthetic, figured I better get this going before it gets out of hand.

Modifications: Tint, logos and emblem wraps, roof rack, Ed's replica HID headlights, OEM GTI LP grill, LEDs added to rear, Lamin-X to tails, forward and rearward facing action cams, cel phone magnet, ECS flush kit, ECS exhaust tips. I think that's it so far. Will continue with pics as time allows. Cheers!

Glad to see you on the board JC.
If know how much you like your car so it is great to see you showing the work.
Like the head lights. Bright!

Now you have to lower it.;)

Thank you! Have been thinking about doing this for a while, well since I read yours. If Santa got my list, I should have something better to share. Now to get caught up before then!

And those were just the DRL's. Hard to get a good pic of them because of how bright they are.

As soon as I decide on which spring. Can't do coil-overs, not yet. It's going to have an inconsistent tire gap no matter which spring I choose apparently. May see if someone/company will mix a set up for me. Like a more aggressive spring in the front, less drop in the back?? Pour molten lead in some of the crevices under the hood? Sandbags?

First thing's first...Tint - Step 1

So these cars are most window tinters worst nightmare. Obviously, fate had it that I would end up in one. FML. German engineering means deep and tight door seals, tight panels, felt seals etc. Then there's those freaking front quarter windows. I gave it a lot of thought before deciding against pulling pillar and panels apart. I'd rather have exterior black vinyl than have to listen to rattles and such from broken tabs.

Step 1 - LLumar ATR20CH on doors, rear panel windows and back glass. 3M Crystalline 40 on the front windshield with a moderate visor of approx 9" on the ends giving 7.5" in the middle. Just enough to give a little help at sunset, but not overwhelming IMO.

Any condensation on glass tinted with crystalline does this weird thing where it reflects red or orange back at you. Not sure why this happens, likely whatever layer(s) that are at work reducing the IR. Have never seen this with any other film.

Roof rack

So before this car, I spent all my extra time (and money) on cycling. Yes, I was that guy that had $10K bike on the roof of a $1500 car. Priorities yo. So the rack from my previous car (98 Civic) was still quite functional so I decided to just transfer it. All I needed to do was order make/model specific Q clips for the towers. Yakima Q Tower rack system with 2 Yakima Viper bike trays and a janky old fairing. New fairing was quick to acquire, so added the new Yakima wind shield 46" fairing which fit this roof perfectly. The rest of the system is showing signs of use and fading, but until I can find something similar, low profile and sleek, this will have to do.

I like stickers just like the next guy. However, not plastered all over the exterior of a clean vehicle taking away from the flow of things. Decided to support my sponsors and show my interests in a less conspicuous way.

Intro to emblems

Have always been a fan of black accents on a car. Wheels, emblems, windows etc. Had seen several GTI's with completely blacked out emblems and for whatever reason it looked a little off to me. Researched for a while and finally had a few minutes on hand. Not knowing how to remove them yet, gave it a shot with some 3M gloss black wrap material. Didn't quite turn out how I wanted, so I used my knife to shave the frontal edges, revealing some chrome. With the GTI logos being chrome still, thought I'd drive it around for a while to see if it grew on me.

The rear emblem was a pain, mostly because it pivots to open the hatch. I couldn't get the material tucked into the opening enough and could still see the chrome in some spots. I sort of expected it would be temporary, but was better than full chrome.

LeRoi approves

Little buddy was starting to wonder why I'm in the garage so much when I'm supposed to be chilling on the couch with him. So I grabbed him up one Sunday to see what he thought of the car. Headed out to our local, dog friendly growler pub called Heaven and Ale. This is LeRoi, a rescued :)eek:) French Bulldog. When he was tiny tiny tiny, he got very sick. Long story short, his new family couldn't afford to fix him so we adopted him, hoping to give him what he needs to pull through. We being my girlfriend who works as a vet. 4 years later, this little guy can't be held back. If anyone here has ever considered this breed, all I can say is, they are really awesome dogs. I've never seen anything like it. The loyalty and personality are above and beyond with these guys. Anyway, he was in my car, so it's relevant.

He wasn't quite sure what to think just yet...

...but he took to it pretty quickly.

I'm interested in your $10k bike! I bet that's a sweet machine too
Ha, thanks man, it's pretty fast. 10K MSRP. I didn't pay that much! Built it from frame up.

Lamin-X tail light kit

Went back and forth about this one. Exterior was starting to take shape, the dark side has been whispering in my ear since I got the car. Another mod I felt comfortable trying myself. At our shop we do plenty of paint protection and this product seemed very similar. Same process, different chemical restrictions. I.E., the glue will dissolve if you use anything harsh such as alcohol. That became an issue on the final light to be covered, as I quickly learned the hard way. No, I'm not including pictures of the one I screwed up and that's all I have to say about that. All in all, the pieces fit really well requiring very minimal trimming. Not sure that I would call it a DIY mod for these cars though. I went with the medium Gunsmoke version.

Thank you! Needed to build some credit, so I splurged on a deal I couldn't refuse for the frame. The matte clear over raw carbon is just insane looking. This things begs to climb, but is equally stable flying down gravel roads. Barring anything tragic, this will probably be the last frame I purchase.

Badgeskins

Ordered these same time as the Lamin-X. Not a huge fan of Plasti Dip, not crazy about mods that are mostly permanent (paint), decided to give this a shot. Cost was reasonable, pics from website showed some interesting ideas so I ordered a few pieces. GTI badges, blades and sun visor warning covers. Overall impressed with the fit of the vinyl over the emblems. Super easy to install for the most part. The blades were a little tricky since the vinyl was so small. My favorite pieces are the sun visor seat belt warning label covers. You had the opportunity to choose background and logo colors and texture. It really improves the look of the interior from the driver seat. I would highly suggest using an adhesive promoter on the sun visor labels prior to installation. We use Pro Bond regularly when wrapping cars, on edges and significant bends on surfaces (corners etc.). The surface of the visors is not very "vinyl friendly" because it's textured. The Pro Bond really helped. Warning: a little goes a long way. Apply small amount to paper towel, rub lightly onto intended coverage area only. It will remove/smear the label if you rub too much.
