Locking steering wheel

This means, presumably, the steering isn't locked, but minus the power assistance
it does feel very stiff. I must admit I haven't tried to steer when this happens.

This is what I asked or suggested all along:rolleyes:. My steering becomes very stiff when S/S activates, just as though power assistance has been de-activated which it has. And if you do attempt to move the wheel by pulling it left or right, which isn't impossible, you'll find that the engine will start up again, at least mine does.

My Audi Q3 has start/stop and when the engine cuts out, you do lose the power assistance on the steering - but it is definitely still steerable.

I therefore concur with the VW Tech Support Team on this.
