Anyone here use the AF intake?
AFE? Yep good little noise maker

I like that it uses stock bottom. But noise is all i noticed. I plan to install the cover to make it enclosed in the summer months. I could of got a BOV and a filter to achieve the desired goal but didn't want to have any issues with replacing stock DV

Kevin would you not recommend doing some dremmel work on the airbox? So even at stage 2 that weird ass looking airbox is pulling in enough? lol It just doesn't make sense to me that there's no back side to the part where air pulls in. But I'm no engineer either hah.

On a stage 2 setup, there might be some actual benefit to replacing the airbox or altering the stock one. Anything less than that, why bother? That thing is engineered the way it is for various reasons. Everything is a tradeoff of course, but what real gains are you going to see by monkeying with it? It's tinkering for the sake of tinkering IMHO.

Agreed.
Why 'eff around with it just to 'eff around with it?
With no provable gain, and even if there is some gain it's likely to be completely insignificant.
But somehow we're going to improve on this thing by taking a Dremel to it?

My simple intake is lovely. It's a snow guard delete, AFE air filter and CTS Turbo inlet. Definitely a noticeable improvement over stock

My issue with the stock intake was clearance of the turbo discharge pipe. When I installed the neuseped discharge pipe the box would hit the pipe/hose. I went with the enclosed injen and absolutely love it. But dyno seems faster but I have no equal playing field. Other mods were installed at the same time. From my understanding replacing the turbo inlet 90 and the flex hose will provide better results than an intake.
im running spulen turbo outlet no problem. its smaller diameter i think.

I did exactly this but with an AFE filter and I love it. Perfect noise level for me.

Any extra turbo noise? I don't really care about intake/engine noise, just want some extra woosh

I've been researching nearly every different intake and every forum with an intake topic. I know that this is heavily discussed and hard to decide on.

My question is, if I'm to purchase an intake like aFe stage 2(link below) for $320 and it just connects to stock airbox, what makes it special? I'm seeing that with a lot of the popular intakes (aside from the bank breakers that are $450+). Isn't the stock airbox restrictive because it definitely has a restrictive appearance? What makes these any better than more frowned upon intakes like Injen or AF Dynamic's $160 intake(link below)?

Also, essentially from my take on these more expesive closed intakes that go all the way to grill, what would be the difference from just buying something like the aFe or AF Dynamic intakes I linked and just dremeling out the driver side of the airbox? Are there any cons or negative side affects to this? I live in a rainy climate but so long as there's a drain hole under the intake, wouldn't it be doing the same thing as APR closed intake with just a cheaper, different look?

One other thing I'm curious about since I'm here, why do Injen intakes have such negative reviews on the forums? I've seen on many threads that Injen is actually more restrictive than stock intake, it just makes more noise.

Nothing makes it special.

There's a moderator on this forum that sells parts for an intake solution: if you look at the horizontal intake in your GTI, it has a grate cut out on the passenger side. You can either make the same cutouts on the driver's side, or make a rectangular cutout and cover with a grate sold by the aforementioned moderator. He also makes scoops. In addition to making the grate-like cutout, you make additional cutouts in the intake to make the driver's side look like the passenger's side. Done. You'll spend at most $40.

There's more filter area, which may or may not be necessary at higher power levels. If the rest of the car is stock, you'll at least hear a lot more induction noise.

I did the mod I described above, and I use a K&N drop in filter. I hear a bit more spool noise.
The thing about more filter area, as well as stuff like turbo inlet elbows and such is whether the turbo inlet can even support a greater flow rate due to enlarged area. I am not a specialist on cars, just something I've been wondering. I'm a little skeptical about larger air intakes (even though I modified my own, lol).
