Fuel Filler Housing Drain

My Fuel Filler Housing Drain pipe has fallen out from underneath the car.

I tried to put this back in. However, it doesn't appear where it did before next to the offside rear tyre, even though the pipe doesn't resist being pushed back in.

Has anyone ever refitted it? If I don't is it essential to have considering there will just now be a gaping hole?

Sorry it has been a while, but i believe when you take off your back wheel well where your gas cap is, the filler is held up there inside by a screw, im guessing yours fell out. If you bought a modified car where they did suspension work back there, then they would have removed this bolt to move the filler system out of the way.

On the GTI at least, it has sort of a 'hook' type mechanism up top, and unbolts from the bottom. So if the top is flopping around a bit, that could be your answer. If you've got any photos, that might be helpful.
