Audi tech here, just got all the technical dirt on the new 4.0 TFSI V8...my god.


The TT-RS engine is also looking to be very promising. I'd assume tunes will yield some pretty significant gains. The engine is fairly overbuilt and the turbo is big in VW/Audi terms. Stock boost pressure is only 18psi.

APR Engine Tune

Thx for feedback. It's good to hear this from an audi cert tech.

As much as I'm intoxicated by the idea of the HP and TQ, I wondered if it would be an expensively risky proposition over the long term (trading power for longevity and expensive non-warranty repairs).

But your point about stronger internals with conservative psi, make me think it may be less concerning.

I never felt the need to tune the GTI since the stock tune was a good fit for the fwd platform and the APR tuned mk6 I drove didnt impress me (enough) with ability to put power to the pavement. I'd imagine the TTRS with awd would be a different story.

Almost all VWAG products are conservatively tuned for both model year updates (zomg more power for 2012!) and for reliability. But as is seen with APR tunes on numerous cars a good amount of power can be had and you can stay within stock boundaries of timing, boost and knock control.

The engine on the TTRS is basically one half of the S6/S8 V10 motor and is unbelievably overbuilt. Forged crank, forged pistons, double roller chain, etc. The turbo is a 61mm Borg Warner. The only major bottle neck I with the engine is the down pipe as the turbo outlet to the cat is almost 3 inches, but the down pipe splits to two pipes when passing underneath the car. Audi did do their homework with the exhaust as its a dual 2.5" system.

I've yet to drive one as we won't get them at my dealer until late this year.

I drove it and just had to have it.

Gone is the PJ Mustang I had.

I'm extremely pleased with the move. I now need to get protected (clearbra), tinted and spaced (10 mm rear H&R spacers).

The exhaust note ane engine noises are like ear porn for an enthuisiast (like the thread subject says - best way to put it).

Believe me, I'm tempted.

As for the color, the Phantom Black with the Ti pkg is the most aggressive looking way to go with the RS, for sure. :thumbup:
