Excuse the noobish question but what actions can be taken with oil analysis data? For example, letís say the presence of nickel keeps going up indicating a serious issue. What can I do about this. Is this something I should document with the dealership ahead of time?

Im mainly doing the oil analysis to get a baseline before I go stage 2 in about a year. If my next oil analysis isnt great, Iíll forego the tune. But what would I do next?

Dealership would call it normal wear and tear. There is unfortunately not much you can do about it, except switch oil like was mentioned.

Dealer won't do anything until you have an actual problem, which you may never have. For now shorten oil change intervals to 5k and use better oil.

5W40 or 0W40 2050 LiquiMoly seems to be a fairly popular choice. The 0W is higher quality base stock but not technically VW502 approved. See below for additional reading.

1- Ravenol SSL (best)
2- Liqui Moly 2050
3- Motul 8100 X-Cess
4- Castrol Edge 0w-40

Just make sure its approved by vag502 not just recommended by the company for warranty reasons. I use liqui moly 5w40 leichtlauf high tech. Vag 502.00 approved.

I had my Motul Xcess analyzed at 15k. Copper and Nickel were slightly elevated still.

That’s the third change and they definitely didn’t say I could go longer. So it’s 5k for me.

I will maybe try Molygen or standard Liqui Moly 2050.

Any oil that meets all of the below specs:

VW502 / Porsche A40 / MB 229.5 / BMW LL-01 / FIAT-Ferrari-Maserati (H2/Z2/etc)

Is going to perform identically over the life of an engine in terms of wear protection.
No amount of boutique, 100% Group IV stock oil is going to affect anything meaningful.

Use OE filters, a good oil, and you'll have no problems.

I personally use Pennzoil Euro 0w-40 ($23/5qts) and Mahle filters.

What kind of numbers are you seeing with cooper and nickel?

Just got my second UOA results, my copper still seems a bit high? But things look good otherwise. I'm going to stick with the SP-III for a while since it's 504.00 rated and I'd like to do extended change intervals on it once the warranty is up.

I should have an interesting comparison for us all in a few months. I have done 2 Blackstone analysis with Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5w-40. First sample was pulled at 40k mi with 6k mi on the oil; second one was pulled at 45k mi (obviously 5k on the oil). Both came back clean with no elevated metals at all.

At that point I decided that since I was going to be track driving more often, I wanted to just run less expensive oil and switch it more often (depending on the number of track days). I used Castrol Edge 5W-30 on that fill up and plan to switch it out at 5k (I have about 1500 miles left to go to at this point). I will do another Blackstone analysis and we can see if there are any differences between my Liqui Moly results and the regular Castrol synthetic (non-VAG502).

As mentioned above, not sure if there is much I could do if there was a problem, but I guess this gives some peace of mind.

Car has 40,000 miles on it.

Castrol Edge 0w-30 A3/B4 in use for 5600 miles, 29,900 car miles when drained. Tons of life left and I was surprised to see the iron number so low. 90% highway miles, easy on the throttle until oil hits 180F then whatever.

Refilled with Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0w-40 and a VW filter.
