Cylinder Numbering

What's the numbering scheme on our in-line fours? Which cylinder is number 1 -- the leftmost or rightmost when looking at the engine while standing in front of the car?

general rule: cylinder count starts from the front of engine (timing & accessories) towards the back (gearbox)
