235/45r17 or 245/45/r17?

I've been researching and can't decide what tire width to throw on my r. Is the wider tire worth the extra cost and weight for better grip? Also will the wider tire do anything for stiffening the side wall on a 45 tire? Planning on continental extremecontact sport tires

The 235 is the only one that comes close to being the proper size. The 245 is just too tall.

It totally depends on the tire for width, they can vary quite a bit even in the samw size. 235≠235mm. Check out the specs on tirerack.

In all fairness 245/45 is only a 7.1MM diff in overall diameter from a 235/40-18.

That’s only a 1.1% diff.

Really? The stock size (according to Tirerack) is 225/40/18. That tire has a diameter of 25.1 inches. The 245/45/17 is 25.6 inches - or 2.4%.

Is that enough to cause warranty woes? Who knows, but a motivated dealer might just cause issues if they are annoyed enough.

I went with the 235/45 r17, I know that the 245 would fit, after more search i've heard people using 245/35r19 and 245/40r18 without rub. And cb1111 the stock tire setup is 235/35 r19 for the R, maybe you are thinking of the gti. A 245/45r17 is only 5mm different from stock, 0.8%. Anyways kinda wish I would have gone for the wider tires now, but needed to make a move, next time going 245... Need to remember that a lot of forum people don't really know jack but type like they are the top authority on the matter, caugh caugh CB.

I was under the impression the Golf R was 235/40-18 or 235/35-19 depending on wheel package.

Tirerack says 225/40/18. That's what I went by. If it is 235/40/18, then that size is mostly fine as that has a diameter of 25.4

Hey for your 235/45/17

are you on lowering springs? and/or aftermarket struts/shocks?

any rubbing going on/off ramps, driveways, cornering etc?

Thanks !
