Golf MK7 - is my gearbox dying? 1st to 2nd gear crunch.

Hi all,

I own a 2013 MK7 Golf 1.4 TSI with a 6 speed manual gearbox.

Occasionally (when the car is driven for sometime in a single journey), I start getting a crunch from 1st to 2nd. When it starts, it’s constant! If the car is switched off and cooled down, it seems to be fine again or if I drive it the next day.

Is my gearbox on the way out? Is there anything I can do to resolve?

Thanks

How many miles?
Sounds like the synchromesh 2nd to 3rd has been damaged. I had a crunch into 3rd gear when I damaged the synchro with a too fast a gear change without fully disengaging the clutch.
Don't think the gearbox will fail, mine lasted for a good few years and I sold the car with the crunch. But worth draining the oil and see how many metal shards and bits comes out. The drain plug may well have a magnetic debris trap. New oil may also help with it. Contrary to the book, it is worth changing the oil anyway.

Factory tends to underfill..well mine was...& the gear mech under the cabin is plastic & adds slop....which means bad gear shift..

Thanks for the responses guys, it's on over 65k miles now! Should I be taking it to a garage to the gearbox oil change? What oil should I use?

Yes, I'd go for an oil change first and see if that improves it. It will also provide an opportunity to see if there is any debris. A VW independent specialist garage will know what oil to use or Haynes manual. At a guess an EP 80 or 90 oil.
And I meant possible damage to 1 to 2 synchromesh, not 2/3.

You may also have insufficient clutch release, which is always most evident on 1st to 2nd. If your clutch pedal is not consistent this may be a clutch cylinder issue.

...if it creaks, it's probably made by VAG
