GTD, what oil??

Just wondered what oil everyone is using

Searched and few people use 5w30 and some 5w40

What's the difference and what's the "best"

the w figure is the viscosity at cold and the 2nd number the viscosity at 100c, so obviously the 5w30 is thinner when warm, if your car is supposed to use 5w30 and you put in 5w40 then there would be extra resistance on the engine harming economy, emissions and performance, on the converse if the car is supposed to use a higher viscosity oil and you opt for a thinner oil, then premature wear on the engine can ensue.
So simply refer to the MFRS specific recommendations. As you have read there is no BEST, it's not a 1 horse race.

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AV-L 0W-30.

Because I THINK it's one of the very best. Meets VW 504 00 and 507 00.
The GTD demands for 507 00, regardless of whether you're running variable
or fixed intervals (see your manual).

Generally oils meeting VW 504/507 00 are only available in either 0W-30 or
5W-30 viscosity, nothing else.

I'd suggest BP Visco 7000 0W-40 instead if you don't care for Volkswagen
specs, as I BELIEVE it's even better. I'd even add a small amount of Liqui
Moly Ceratec or something similar. Remember BP = Castrol.

That said, I agree with Avanti, there's no absolute best oil out there. Oil
certainly isn't any reason to lose sleep about it. Use any oil that is meeting
the manufacturer's spec, swap it frequently and your engine will be fine.
